Disturbing new surveillance video shows the moment a 51-year-old man was brutally attacked by a hatchet-wielding maniac while at a Lower Manhattan ATM.
The footage, obtained by The Post on Tuesday, shows the victim at one of the ATMs inside a Chase Bank vestibule on Broadway near Beaver Street in the Financial District shortly before 5:30 p.m. Sunday when his attacker walks in, removes a hatchet from a dark bag, sneaks up behind him and begins slashing him.
The frightened and bloodied victim tries to fend off the brutal assault, falling to the floor several times as he futilely attempts to grab his crazed assailants weapon, the footage shows.
When the unidentified suspect is finished beating his victim, he smashes the screens of the cash-dispensing machines before walking away and leaving the hatchet and his backpack behind, according to police. The wounded man was hospitalized in stable condition, police said. Cops hope the surveillance video helps them catch the maniac, sources said.

(24,468 posts)Oh, wait, you do. But in a town of 8MM people, this is news?

(94,535 posts)Yes.
Perhaps consider why Defund the Police has had such little appeal, even in cities where the per-capita incidence of violent crime is so low.

(24,468 posts)I get you are a Democratic hi-roller. But you think this kind of bullshit comment helps us in 2022? No one wants to "defund" the police....but lots of us want to "re-prioritize" the purpose of policing, especially at the community level..
brooklynite
(94,535 posts)You bet. Helping us in 2022 means understanding how voters respond to issues and policy slogans. A month or two back I put up a poll as to whether Democrats should challenge the claim that violent crime is up or acknowledge it and respond accordingly. The consensus was that responding to voters crime concerns was far more appropriate.
Youre welcome to advocate re-prioritizing policing, But youre doing in an environment where voters (including Democratic POC) feel that crime has to be addressed. Perhaps you you revisit the results of the NYC Democratic Primary for Mayor?
FWIW - What does my being a Democratic hi-roller have to do with my perspective on political strategy?

(94,535 posts)As a result I have the opportunity to talk to and meet with Party leaders (up to and including VP Biden) and get perspectives on politics in the real world which I tend to share. Some people dont take that well.

Cool. Maybe we should start doing that rather than alleging we are. Doing the former is in now way predicated or dependent on doing the latter...

(94,535 posts)I was stating that crime is an issue of concern to voters today, which has an impact on the outcome of the 2022. I was responding to someone who appears to tell that this attack was no big thing to worry about.

(1,609 posts)Also, there are some democrats who do say that exact phrase publicly. I think that is what will lay the ground work for defeat.

(1,609 posts)That video is fucking horrific! That would be news in any city or town. Good god! We should not be so immune to horrific violence like that no matter where it is! Also, how is posting that laying the ground work for a Dem defeat? Is it an attempt to shut down any conversation about crime in the city.

(18,640 posts)That it shouldn't make the news? If so, I don't think the media is the problem.

(22,365 posts)I suspect the maniac was someone who never received the psychiatric attention they required. More funding for mental health may have prevented the maniac from progressing to insane violent crimes.
The attacker just needed help.

(38,311 posts)It was explained to potential jurors how it was something to do with hatchet violence.
One of the potential jurors said "yeah, I was attacked by a guy with a hatchet," and the judge said, "Oh yeah, now I remember you," and dismissed him.
I was dismissed a little later but nobody asked me directly about the knife scar on my arm.
I've been called for jury duty many times but I've never served on a jury.

(4,787 posts)When a crime like this occurs, the NYPD normally floods social media asking if anyone knows who the suspect is (assuming that they have decent photos). That doesn't seem to be happening.
Some outlets are reporting that the police have said that he is a homeless man. Given the insane nature of the attack, it's likely that this guy has acted out in the past, albeit not as violently. Nowadays, the police all have departmental iPhones, and all of them would have gotten an alert on the attack, asking if anyone recognized him. Since he left the hatchet behind, there would also be fingerprints.
The video is dreadful. The victim didn't even look at the guy as he walked into the machine area, as he was focused on the ATM. The assailant went behind him, pulled the hatchet out of a knapsack and simply started whacking him with it. God only knows what was racing through his mind at that point.
