'It's just scary': A Slidell mom's 4 kids test positive for COVID-19, youngest 2 hospitalized
Updated: 7:20 AM CDT Aug 17, 2021
SLIDELL, La.
It's a parent's worst nightmare. Not one, but four kids testing positive for COVID-19. The youngest, 5-month-old Abigale and 2-year-old Shar are currently still at Children's Hospital in New Orleans, where there are little to no beds available. Abigale is on an assisted breathing machine, according to their mom, Gina Allen.
"The kids started coughing and sneezing. I, as a parent, felt like I failed. I felt like everything I had done to protect my kids was not good enough. I am telling you, the worst feeling as a parent is knowing you gave your child something that could possibly kill them," Allen said.
Allen said she and her husband were both vaccinated when they caught COVID-19 from the workplace at least 15 days ago.
They immediately isolated from the kids, but soon after, the four each came down with symptoms. All four kids are under 12 and were unable to get vaccinated.
"My children went from laughing and playing babies to laying around. Every time they moved, they coughed. They could not breathe. I just cannot wait until my babies are home. I would say I cannot wait to take my son to Chuck E. Cheese, but I am afraid now to bring them anywhere in public," Allen said.
As COVID-19 cases continue to rise throughout Louisiana, St. Tammany Parish is still seeing some of the highest increases in cases and deaths in the entire state.

( We're going to keep children safe without another lockdown? I doubt that will be possible. )

(1,776 posts)no remote school available this year. And he has a 1 year old sister. I don't think I am alone in being terrified for him and all the young kids who are going back to school.

(8,361 posts)My niece's family lives in Austin. Her 3 boys went back to school recently, one of the boys now has Covid.
They are scared, although the principal insisted on masks there were 3 staff members who refused, she had no authority to remove them from the school. Her other two boys are not going back to school. Her husband's family lives nearby and they will help out as they isolate it.
I do not like what I see coming.

(68,735 posts)To no monitoring of the spread of covid. This is Georgia. Today he has covid and is pretty sick. He is still home for now. I would homeschool or do virtual if I were you. Most of my sis` s neighbor kids have it and the school is now on virtual learning...too little too late.

(8,361 posts)Parents need a viable option out of school. Best wishes for your family's children's health, with a full recovery soon.

(16,578 posts)The process of clinical testing (i.e., testing on humans) of drugs, including vaccines, is a lot more complicated than I think most people realize. I'm no expert, so I'm hazy on the details. But here's a source that may help: https://www.historyofvaccines.org/content/articles/vaccine-development-testing-and-regulation

(5,857 posts)they could have tripled the study size and finished in (approximately) 1/3 the time. They are waiting for X number of the placebo group to get infected before it undergoes certification. They are also using 3 different doses to see if there is any difference in the side effects/effectiveness of the doses.
What they weren't planning for was Delta (the trial was planned no later than Jan 1), and what seems to be greater infectiveness. That said if they didn't have any safety issues after 6 weeks they should have EUAed the low dose immediately with plans to just do another booster if neccessary.

(25,988 posts)'Parents' should at least have to show residency in the school district before being allowed to attend these meetings. Requiring ID for entry might cull a surprising number of the loudmouths.

(100,115 posts)It's not the parents complaining about things like masks and vaccine mandates. It's these troll groups with names like "Protect The Children" that are infiltrating school board, city council, and county supervisor meetings with the intent of raising hell. These people who are disrupting are the ones who should be shown the door and told to fuck off.

(45,591 posts)it's going to spread to everyone in the house. That's how transmissable this delta virus is. It's been a big problem in countries where several generations live together.

(22,840 posts)Kids will not only get sick and possibly die, they will become vectors for the virus and spread it around like warm peanut butter.

(34,086 posts)show or joan espisito's show) who was against mask wearing for kids. this dad said last school yr the kids had to wear masks in school and then they'd all play after school without masks. so... masks don't do anything.

(8,361 posts)world is a parent to protect their child? Even with masks, I am not sure they should be in school. Are all the adults/staff they encounter vaccinated? When those children go home, are their parents vaccinated?
littlemissmartypants
(22,840 posts)Of the kids, teachers and staff vaccinated. If I had school age children right now I would not be sending them to school under any circumstances.
We're basically in a situation where we have a highly contagious variant, poor vaccination rates and an overabundance of vectors to spread the virus. Things are going to get a lot worse. We're basically at the mercy of everyone who refuses to get vaccinated.

(1,910 posts)If we can not speak frankly about the obesity problem in America and put every ounce of our energy into it once we get a handle on Covid, we have failed our kids.
Enough with the politically correct nonsense, the biggest risk factor by far for the non elderly and worse outcome with Covid is obesity. Not one of us expected to see the photo of the family with a huge Covid problem and expected them to look fit.
We are not giving people the resources they need in poorer communities to eat healthy. Eating healthy is expensive. More money into community centers so both parents and kids can get proper instruction to improve their health.
We need a full bore national effort to combat obesity, lots more education and the financial resources to exercise and eat healthy.

I actually never even thought about what they might look like.
And speaking of looks, fat shaming is not a good one.
