Well, we all know that Covid had an effect on grooming habits, even for the media. Let me just say, that I was okay with all of it. To my knowledge, no one came on board with mutton chops or porn mustaches. The beards were fine. It showed that we were all in it together. And, five o'clock shadows were always okay, compliments of Miami Vice.
For the most part, the change was barely noticeable with female reporters, except in that first year, their hair grew longer. And, now that we're coming out of Covid I do notice how some reporters are using the freedom to salon, probably because we were all deprived for about a year.
One person that caught my eye was Joy Reid. I don't know who is doing her hair, but shout out to them. Love the results. Joy Reid has such a range of choices. Glam styles that embrace her ethnicity and beyond.
Men too. But I almost feel sorry for white male reporters because they have the least choices available to them. Black men always have the option to wear their hair in a natural Afro. Just saw a male reporter coiffed with an Afro and I have to say, thumbs up.

(3,338 posts)I myself have stopped coloring and am fully transitioned to my natural colors. It takes courage for a woman to transition on tv. The vitriol can be too much.

(3,338 posts)Havent really seen too many friends this past year, so Im bracing for negative comments. Women can be so mean to each other instead of being supportive.
Love my colors and at this point, have no desire to color ever again! How about you?
Looks like I'll end up with my late dad's silver white hair. I'll take it!

What I do not care for is over gesticulation amongst 80% of talking heads, rough estimate. Why do talking heads seem to think they need accentuate every other word they say with a gesticulation - a hand chop, a hand wave, a hand thrust, an arm wave, both arm waves, both hands gyrating every which way? It can be annoying, distracting, and generally proves little. Makes them look like nervous nellies with ants in their pants.
Good man Bernie Sanders does it amongst the most, gesticulating about 90% of the time, Rachel Maddow my favorite MSNBC host has about a 70% rating along with Nancy Pelosi. Trump and Biden about 40%. Shouldn't be more than an acceptable 10% of the time. Lester Holt is good with it, rarely see it on his shows. But Bernie Sanders often starts hand moving with the second word spoken. If you silhouetted Bernie and muted him, and he has both hands free, sometimes he looks like he's conducting the war of 1812 overture. At least he keeps his arms down when delivering eulogies, should make it de rigueur.
I think they do not even realize they are doing it, since it rarely is discussed. If someone clued them in they would be aware of it and start to stop it, ha.
It is not normal to over gesticulate. I will not call it abnormal, but just not normal to move your hands all about when you talk. I used to put up pillows, books, potato chip bags covering the bottom part of the tv screen when watching Rachel, but kept seeing her fingertips rising above them, so I just shut my eyes but then missed some videos, oh well.
I have created STOGATH - Stop Over Gesticulation Amongst Talking Heads. Website under construction.
