I'm so sad today about my Gulf Coast.

Please don't hit me while I'm suffering. I'm heartbroken.

Edit to add it’s really the massive COVID outbreak and the awful snark toward everyone there. There are many good people, and I wouldn’t wish that kind of pain in anyone.

2. No shortages that I'm aware of . . .

I'm in New Orleans and have family members on the Mississippi Coast and in Mobile. I talk to them several times a week . . . no shortages. The OP might be about this:

Gulf Coast’s ‘Redneck Riviera’ a COVID hot spot but people keep coming: ‘They’ve got to live their lives’

5. Yeah, sorry I was obtuse. I wrongly assumed people here were following.

My people are all over there. Along the coast and in New Orleans and outlying areas. They’re really in danger.

And I get your point about the snarky comments. The mocking of the south is once again visible for all to see. Oregon has a shortage of ICU beds and I don't see the hateful "they had it coming" responses that I usually see for any bad news regarding the south.

Folks who live in blue states should think about how easy it is to be a Democrat in their state. Try being a liberal in a red state.

And they need to remember that virtually all cities of significant size, regardles of their location on the map, are heavily populated with Democrats. When they write off the south, they are also writing off millions of Democrats.

10. Democrats as a percentage of the population may increase significantly when this is done.

Especially down South.

12. There are probably more Democrats who have died than Republicans in the South

Sure we hear about a famous loudmouth dying now and then, but for every very public death, there are scores of others. Hispanics have low vaccination rates. A Democratic election judge died down here died. She was fully vaccinated.

14. I would love to see some confirmed statistics on that. I know repug states don't do

statistics, so will not hold my breath.

Verified statistics show vaccinated people are much LESS likely to be hospitalized and to die from Covid-19. Note LESS likely not absolutely won't. Other studies have shown Democrats are far more likely to be vaccinated than repugs.

In March, "...47 percent of Republicans said they’ve already received the vaccine or plan to do so, compared to 71 percent of Democrats."

"...analysis also found that more than 90% of cases -- and more than 95% of hospitalizations and deaths -- have been among unvaccinated people. In most states, more than 98% of cases were among the unvaccinated"

I understand. It really is heartbreaking. I feel it, too.

There really are wonderful people there. I hope you continue to share how you feel.

I’m a native Floridian. Born in Ft. Lauderdale, and lived all over the state. Went to UWF in Pensacola, and worked there for several years, until I picked up and moved to Birmingham for graduate school. Ended up staying there for 30 years.

However, the coast always called us back. Hubby is from NOLA. The salty sea breezes, the lazy casualness is intoxicating. Politics couldn’t keep us away when we had a chance to move back. We live a mile from the beach and the area known as 30a.

The past two years have been trying. We no longer have seasons, it’s crowded with rude tourists all year long. Rich people who have unlimited money and can work from wherever.

As you, I mourn for the situation we’re in. A lot of people here don’t understand why we choose to live where we are, but it is what it is. Our roots and the culture we grew up with calls us back.
