Trump handed the Taliban 5000 additional fighters with which to take over the country.
The US withdrawal deadline was given and we started our exit in coordination with the Afghan government. All assurances from the Afghan government were that our embassy and citizens in the country would be safe. The sitting government would hold.
There was no communication that the Afghan leaders or military would abandon their fellow citizens to the Taliban without a fight. Not to us, not to any other foreign or international entity operating in Afghanistan.
Not even the more educated Afghan citizens saw this coming. They did not pack and plan to get out ahead of the deadline. They did not stock up at home. They did not cash out their bank accounts.
Suddenly the Afghan president was out of the country - mere hours after assuring everyone they'll hold the capital. Our embassy will be safe. We've got time to do what is needed leading up to the end of the month.
If all this is accurate, then I want to know if the Afghan Civilian and military leadership cut a deal with the Taliban to hand over the country in exchange for safe passage out for them and their families
I have not heard anyone asking this sort of question.

(123 posts)Not only that, the original "Trump deal" was to have U.S. totally out by May 1st I think it was. Contrary to the narrative of Biden "rushing" the exit Biden extended the withdrawal to August 31st. If we stayed longer than that as per agreement our small remaining contingency would be open to renewed Taliban attacks. Biden only option was to get out but extend that timeline as far as possible which he did. Adding troops ahead of the deadline would have started direct attacks on our troops by Taliban.
Trump totally fucked the U.S. and Biden and all CNN can talk about is Biden didn't do this right but even with hind sight no one can say exactly what that was.

Ghani had just about all of it, enough to fill 4 SUVs and an airplane.

(5,128 posts)They were sued for screwing with the visa program for translators/allies. The rule is visa processing is supposed to be 9 months. Under trump, 4 or more years. It took 4 yrs for him to break the visa program but Biden was to fix it in a few months. In actually less time the visa process was supposed to take. Funny there wasnt much media outrage when he did that.
