The Capitol Police officer who fatally shot Ashli Babbitt outside a door of the U.S. Capitol has been formally exonerated after an internal investigation, according to a department memo obtained by NBC News.
The officer, whose name has not been released, opened fire on Babbitt as she and a mob of other Trump supporters tried to forcefully enter the Capitol on Jan. 6.
Video of the shooting showed Babbitt in front of a crowd of rioters trying to get through a door leading to where members of Congress were being evacuated on the House side of the building.
The Justice Department announced in April that no charges were being brought against the officer. The exoneration by the Capitol Police wraps up the last remaining investigation into the incident.
A memo from the commander of the Capitol Polices Office of Personal Responsibility says no further action will be taken in this matter after the officer was exonerated for use of force.
The Capitol Police did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

(84,823 posts)How was that officer possibly supposed to know she wasnt armed and ready to do real damage - and maybe worse?
She ONLY tried to climb in over the heads of a crowd of menacing attackers through a broken window into a high security area already under seige by an active, violent, and uncontrolled mob of rioters and other assorted nogoodniks, many of whom WERE armed, wearing paramilitary gear, throwing fists, spraying bear spray and tear gas, outnumbering the police, attacking officers with their own shields (remember shoot him with his own gun!?), stealing documents l, souvenirs and stuff out of Congressional offices, tearing down barricades, breaking windows and furniture and creating wreckage and mayhem everywhere they went. Thats all.
ABSOLUTELY NO sympathy whatsoever. She got what she deserved. Period.

(30,040 posts)she was climbing through the window. the warning had been given. i watched the first unedited videos taken after she was shot, at least i think they were the first. it's heart wrenching to see a young woman die, but i felt then and believe to this day that her shooting was justified.
that mob was hell bent on murder. i watched the event fold out on PBS news and the anchor kept calling the insurrectionists "protesters" until I was screaming at my computer. It was like she (the anchor whose name I should know but don't) was not capable of processing what she was looking at.

(26,158 posts)As former military, she knew exactly what she was doing and that it was wrong. There's no way she didn't see or hear that a gun was drawn against her. Shooting her stopped the mob cold, and certainly save many lives. Period.

(8,942 posts)The Capitol Police officer who fatally shot DOMESTIC TERRORIST Ashli Babbitt AT AN INTERIOR DOOR OF THE US CAPITOL DIRECTLY OFF OF THE HOUSE FLOOR WHERE MEMBERS OF CONGRESS WERE PRESENT has been formally exonerated after an EXHAUSTIVE internal investigation, according to a US CAPITOL POLICE department memo obtained by NBC News. MONTHS AGO, THE OFFICER WAS ALSO EXONERATED BY THE METROPOLITAN POLICE DEPARTMENT AND THE US ATTORNEYS OFFICE. THIS INVESTIGATION WAS INTO THE USCP POLICIES, AND AGAIN, HE WAS FOUND TO HAVE VIOLATED NONE.
The officer, whose name has not been released, FIRED ONE ROUND IN DEFENSE OF MEMBERS OF CONGRESS, CONGRESSIONAL STAFF AND HIS FELLOW OFFICERS THAT STRUCK Babbitt. SHE and a VIOLENT mob of other DOMESTIC TERRORISTS SUPPORTING DISGRACED FORMER PRESIDENT Trump WERE TRYING TO forcefully enter the HOUSE CHAMBER DURING THE INSURRECTION on Jan. 6.
Video of the shooting showed Babbitt in front of a crowd of TERRORISTS LAUNCHING HERSELF THROUGH A WINDOW THAT THE TERRORISTS HAD SMASHED OUT LEADING DIRECTLY to where members of Congress were being evacuated FROM the House CHAMBER WHILE DEBATING THE CHALLENGE TO ARIZONA'S ELECTORAL COLLEGE VOTES THAT WAS BASED ON A LIE.
The Justice Department announced in April that no charges were being brought against the officer. The exoneration by the Capitol Police wraps up the last remaining investigation into the incident.
A memo from the commander of the Capitol Polices Office of Personal Responsibility says no further action will be taken in this matter after the officer was exonerated for use of force IN PROTECTION OF THE MEMBERS OF CONGRESS AND DEMOCRACY ITSELF.
The Capitol Police did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

(19,063 posts)This actually clarified some important details for me, and I've been following this thing from the start. Thanks for that.
I would just suggest changing "former" president to "outgoing" president, since TFG was still in office when the insurrection occurred. It's easy to lose track of that, since his behavior at the time was so grotesquely unlike that of any other outgoing president in history!

(6,608 posts)for all pertinent 'news' articles and had a website of your own... i think you could make a shit-ton of money. I'd pay $10 a month for you to reprocess the news accurately for me. And the content may not be copyrighted if you rewrite every article USING THE TRUTH. I don't know, with the right support and staff, i could see it being a thing. Unless there is already such a thing...

(38,723 posts)This was posted when it came out in June, but it's worth posting again. The video is 40 minutes & is a compilation of video collected from that day, from various sources. They include a map of the Capitol grounds with graphics of where the rioters were & where they breached the building. It's so worth the 40 minutes to watch the entire video. Below I noted when Ashli Babbitt got shot. The insurrectionists were clearly warned not to proceed.
