Florida's Kindergartners Offer to Explain Mask Issue to DeSantis

TALLAHASSEE (The Borowitz Report)—A group of Florida’s kindergartners has offered to explain the science underpinning the use of masks to the state’s governor, Ron DeSantis.

Calling DeSantis’s objection to mask mandates “clearly an example of ignorance on his part,” one of the kindergartners, Jayson Dorrinson, said that his fellow five-year-olds were willing to talk to the Governor at his earliest convenience.

“The benefit of wearing masks is so clear, it’s obvious to us that no one has explained this issue properly to Mr. DeSantis,” the kindergartner said. “We’re happy to play that role.”

Dorrinson said that he was “not concerned” that being told the facts about masks might enrage DeSantis, who has been on a short fuse in recent weeks.

“We sincerely hope that he doesn’t get mad,” the five-year-old said. “But, if he does, we’ll just give him a timeout.”

He has a daughter in kindergarten, and when she asked why she had to wear a mask when other kids didn't, he explained it was to protect other people - and she got that, at five-years-old. Governor DeSantis does not.

Go figure, the little kids are the wise ones when it comes to masks.

I know that the students will keep them on if you explain why to them. If it makes sense, you don't need to do much more. In fact, my students were so eager to please the teacher (me) that they would rat out their fellow students if they broke a rule. If someone's mask slipped I'd hear about it in a nanosecond.

And I'd see even the youngest kids getting off the school buses, still wearing their masks. That doesn't mean that there weren't still breakouts in local schools, there were several which led to temporary closings - and at the end of the school year a nearby high school canceled sports and after school activities. I'm just wondering, with all the national controversies, what that's going to mean for schools opening in the fall.

I went to a family funeral last week, my Dad's cousin who died of Covid - and she was fully vaccinated. The church was full and I was a little anxious going, but every single person in that church was wearing a mask, including the priest and the boy who sat in front of me - who couldn't have been over than five. He was obviously used to it, he had his own smaller mask.
