most people who haven't served or are not involved with the military have a very cartoonish idea of how the military actually works, especially those in the right wing that never have served and the ones that have served are even worse because they should know better.

He's probably right that the US military doesn't know how to retreat from a lost war and evacuate everybody who needs to leave all at the same time. There is some encouraging news today at least for the Kabul area.

He's quite wrong about the Soviet withdrawal from Afghanistan. That was a humiliating end for them but it was pretty orderly and the Soviet client state they left behind staggered on for a couple years. One big problem was that the Soviet Union then collapsed, & eventually aid to the client state was terminated. Somehow we telescoped everything together.

I couldn't say about Vietnam. The military was long gone from South Vietnam by the end. The US was not very friendly or used to the idea of accepting refugees & I just don't remember what went on before the fall. Maybe too different for a good comparison?
