The Executive Director of Minnesota's Republican Party organization was forced out of her position this week. The GOP organization's board voted her out, after a story broke about a major donor to the party being accused on federal child porn charges. The connection between Carnahan and the donor is unclear, but what is clear is that they knew each other. Director Carnahan, who cast the deciding vote in the Board of Directors, voted herself a $38,000 termination payment.
Not coincidentally, Jennifer Carnahan, the ousted E.D., is the wife of Jim Hagedorn, a GOP US Representative in Congress. But wait, there's more:
The MN GOP's financial war chest is struggling, with less than $9000 in its state fund and something over $100K in its national fund. Donations are down sharply, apparently, and there had been a financial scandal in the party organization not long ago as well.
Here's why there is such turmoil: The MN GOP, like most state GOP organizations is dealing with a sharp divide between right-wing Republicans and more moderate Republicans. The right-wingers have more or less taken over by being more active and aggressive in seeking leadership positions. More moderate Republicans have been edged out of those organizations, which leaves only the far right to set policies, etc.
What that means is that fund-raising efforts are meeting with resistance from more moderate donors, who are dissatisfied with how things are being run. The right-wingers aren't big on making political donations, either, so the party organizations are strapped for funds.

Personally, I take all of this as a good sign for the future. The GOP appears to be falling apart from within, and that's always a good thing.

(1,521 posts)im really enjoying this. This is confirming what Ive been saying down here in Texasthese loons are a tiny minority.
We need to continue to push these idiots to the margins.
They dont have the numbers to win in the long term. As they get more frustrated they will get more radical. If they continue to primary mainstream Republicans theyll lose seats that were previously untouchable.
Crazy only sells well to the RW nutjobs. And apparently the RWNJs arent much for donating.
Again, Im really enjoying this

(115,686 posts)has a few ethics issues of his own, notably rent-free campaign office space made available to him by a major donor and supporter. The MN GOP is a cesspool, and I don't think the departure of Carnahan, though welcome, will clear up the odor.

(21,633 posts)It's almost a given that Hagedorn was probably one of Lazzaro's clients.

(115,686 posts)Maybe Hagedorn can be gotten rid of, too - although the GOP seems to have a pretty high tolerance for sexual misconduct involving children or underage girls.
Many a Republican (and, sadly, a few Democrats) breathed a lot easier the night Epstein was "suicided."
One wonders how long Lazzaro has.

(81,255 posts)The folks in position actually tp DO SOMETHING to protect our right to vote need to be swamped with calls, messages, letters, texts, tweets, posts about voting rights.
It must become a continually growing and expanding wall of demand that surrounds them and is impossible to get around, escape, avoid, or ignore. And UNRELENTING until we get what WE want.

(1,616 posts)dilemma for the GOP. Go all in Trump and reap the blowback/resistance...or go moderate and turn off the base.

(146,298 posts)Best of all, there's no actual solution, since the far right sector will primary people who aren't adequately nuts.
