Vaccine resistance in the military remains strong, a dilemma for Pentagon as mandate looms

The Pentagon’s effort to mandate coronavirus vaccination for all 1.3 million active-duty service members will continue to face resistance from a segment of the force, troops and observers say, until military leaders devise an effective strategy for countering pervasive doubt about the pandemic’s seriousness and widespread misinformation about the shots designed to bring it under control.

When Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin announced earlier this month that he would seek to require inoculation no later than mid-September, Pentagon data showed that thousands of personnel — about one-third of the force — remained unvaccinated. President Biden quickly endorsed the move.

The looming mandate comes as the virus’s highly transmissible delta variant fuels a new wave of infections globally, and after Biden, in what was widely seen as a signal to state and local governments and the private sector that they should follow suit, directed agencies throughout the federal government to implement proof-of-vaccination requirements or impose restrictions on employees who refuse. For military personnel, administration officials have said, the need is particularly urgent.

“Right now it’s being framed as a readiness issue,” said Katherine Kuzminski, a senior fellow at the Center for a New American Security, pointing to the current security crisis that has unfolded in Afghanistan’s capital, where thousands of U.S. troops were sent with little notice to help evacuate American citizens and U.S. allies following the Taliban’s takeover of the country. “As we see in Afghanistan, there is certainly a need to rapidly deploy people, and they may or may not be going to places that have relatively high rates of vaccinations.”

WTF? When I was in the Army 45 years ago if they told you to get the vaccine you got the damn vaccine.

4. I remember Air force basic training in 1970. We were marched

to the base dispensary, lined up and vaxxed to hell and back by a gauntlet of medics with pneumatic injectors. We formed up in the hot sun as we left the clinic. A few of the troops passed out but our training instructor just screamed at them until they got up and back into formation. Nobody was even asked if they wanted to be vaxxed. Good times.

Send the troops into a new theater of war against Covid. Send them to the movies; shots on the way out, like it or not.

I remember films shown to us in high school driver's ed, seeking to strike fear into us about auto steering wheel column impaling.

Show the troops actual ICU scenes of intubation and dying patients thrashing for air, their skin turning blue.
I suppose this would work better on the newbies than on those with hunger for war experience.
Not all who enlist are nice humans.

11. I don't know if it's me or what BUT seems like

1/3 is the magic number in America. Am i far off by saying approximately 1/3 of Americans are tRUMPERS? or QANONS? I look at it this way if they are against the vaccine, (unless for MEDICAL reasons) they more than likely are tRUMPERS in our military!

15. It seems pretty clear to me.

Once full approval is granted, there will be no conceivable restriction on the military requiring vaccination.

At that point, an order to submit to vaccination will be lawful. Disobedience of a lawful order is a violation of Article 92, UCMJ and should earn a court-martial.

Some soldiers will bitch - some soldiers always bitch - but lawful orders must be obeyed.
