Partisanship has gotten weird.

But I recently saw a thread celebrating the death of an 18 year old (from a dumb accident - not from Covid), so I don't know where that puts us.

Social media are making us an uglier people.

I do feel guilty when I actually "yearn" for someone's demise. But when they do something stupid, and then die because of it, I don't feel guilty about pointing out their stupidity.

If a smoker dies of lung cancer, most people think, "That's a horrible way to go." We don't laugh and high five about it.

If an obese person dies of hypertension or any of the other countless maladies associated with it, we don't hop on message boards discussing how much they deserved it and how happy we are to see them gone for their ignorance and refusal to be healthy.

I just don't see all this as much different.

It's all just very sad. I wish people would've made different choices.

We do this with Covid because we have decided it's socially and politically acceptable to be this callous about it.

Now make threads of fat people dying. See how that one goes.

They're still choices people make. They still cost us money in the health care system. We still have people advocating for it (healthy at any size!). But we don't do that. When someone makes poor choices and dies, we feel sad about it. Well, most of us do, most of the time. If we're empathetic humans.

This nastiness is born of pure politics. Mainly, I think, because the unvaxxed are seen as mostly on the Right. They're not, but that's the Narrative. So it's ok to be nasty about it and them. There are other populations, Democratic demographic populations, that are also way undervaxxed.

Where are those threads of celebration and jokes?

Exactly. If you wouldn't behave that way towards your friends and family, don't do it at all. And if you do behave that way with your friends, I don't want to be yours.

else out with them. Neither is the person who doesn’t monitor their blood pressure or sugar. The anti-vaxers have chosen to be willfully ignorant and their ignorance isn’t just a threat to their life, it’s a threat to everyone they come in contact with. Whatever celebratory note people take when hearing of their demise is due to having outlived someone who seemed hell bent to kill themselves and as many others as possible. So yeah, when I hear that someone has died of terminal stupidity I may very well crack a joke about it.

According to the CDC, since 1964, about 2.5 million people have died from health problems related to the exposure to and inhalation of second-hand smoke.

I've never seen posts of anyone laughing or "high-fiving" about deaths, so I guess I just missed those posts. Pointing out their stupidity is a far cry from laughing or celebrating.

I feel like you're directing your post at me because it was in response to my post, but I've done none of the things you mentioned.

Frankly, I don't think my little post warranted such a response, but if it makes you feel better to unload all that on me, go for it.

If on the other hand, the only concern is how it advertises the person laughing at the expense of the dead, does self-righteous sanctimony at the expense of those laughing also advertise something just as negative?

Not that anyone would ever be guilty of that. Just a hypothetical, is all.

"Well, yes. That will happen."

I don't like that I feel this way, but I do.

At this point, my hope is that this wave goes hard and fast and at the end of it everyone is either vaccinated, immune or dead. Because that's the only way this ends.

They won’t trust a vaccine that is now administered in the millions of doses, but now run to hospitals demanding care involving far more experimental drugs and treatments.

It’s just stupid and needs to be satirized and lampooned.

The only deaths I would make a joke about are the people who cheered on the anti-vaxxers, refused the vaccine him/her self, lay in the hospital whining about the unfairness of it all, or begged for the vaccine just before his/her intubation.
