Right now, the administration is conducting a massive operation in Kabul that has resulted in the evacuation of 50,000 people in eight days. It is also overseeing a life and death battle against COVID that has already resulted in over 200,000,000 Americans receiving the vaccine.
It is also in the midst of negotiations in support of the passage of a vitally needed $1 trillion infrastructure bill, the biggest the US has passed in decades. It is also, at the same time on Capitol Hill involved in negotiations to pass a $3.5 trillion budget package.
Taken together these two congressional initiatives would lead to the biggest investment America has made in itself and in projects vital to our national security and well-being in more than half a century.
Last night, the Vice President of the United States gave a stirring and effective speech in Asia underscoring America's resolve to stand up to Chinese abuses and threats and to lead in the face of competition from a rising China.
Hours before, the president made an address announcing the approval by the FDA of the Pfizer vaccine and urging people to receive the vaccine despite an organized disinformation campaign from the GOP that is leading to widespread death & suffering.
The Department of Justice is working on hundreds of cases related to the attempted coup against the United States government on January 6th while actively conducting programs to reduce the future risk of domestic violent extremism.
DoJ has also made it a priority to combat a nationwide voter suppression campaign by the GOP and abuses in the country's police departments. Elsewhere the government has mounted an unprecedented campaign to battle the climate crisis, its consequences and to undo...
...widespread efforts to put our environment at risk. Part of the effort to get out of Afghanistan involves ramping up programs to help Afghans who aided us find refuge in our country--programs that were shut down, stopped cold, under the Trump Administration.
At the same time, the administration is also trying to undo the damage done by their predecessors at the southern border and the Vice President has been instrumentally involved in seeking to restore programs that would reduce migrant flows at their sources in Central America.
in addition, the administration has been appointing judges at a faster clip than its predecessors and doing so in way that is bringing unprecedented diversity to the nation's courts after years of efforts by the opposition to pack those courts.
What is more it is not just doing all these things--all these big, complex, urgent, essential things--at once, but it is doing them against scorched earth opposition that does not care who dies, whether they tell truth or lies, or whether the national interest is protected.
That opposition has blocked critical appointments from being confirmed. It has politicized. It has obstructed. It is actively advocating to gut our democracy and were it to be win control of the House or Senate next it would present an existential crisis for our system of gov't.
Every government should be doing a lot. This extraordinary list--which on top of it all is being conducted in the midst of overseeing the most extraordinary period of economic recovery in American history, the most jobs ever created in a presidencies first six months--
is all being done and by and large done now under profoundly difficult conditions by President Biden, Vice President Harris, and their team. Watch carefully. Not since the Second World War have we seen a government mobilize so broadly, do so much...
...do it by and large so well, do it in ways that have positively impacted the lives of so many in America and around the world (did I mention they are also overseeing the world's leading vaccine diplomacy program). It is an extraordinary case study in good governance.
Mistakes have been made and others will be made again. But extraordinarily, this administration has also shown the humility and competence and nimbleness to correct missteps, to learn, and do better as they go. Watch carefully and appreciate it.
Because you likely have never seen this kind of display of government management virtuosity before. It's hard to see the big picture sometimes for all the headlines...but this is the reality of what we're getting from our government right now.

(46,045 posts)I hope this author is right about what's going on at DOJ, but it seems as if a long time has passed without much in the way of results. Someone, please convince me I'm wrong.

You are wrong, but that's not uncommon for those unfamiliar with the legal process.

(21,450 posts)the numerous investigations, collections of data and evidence, depositions, etc. going on behind the scenes - for good reasons. Just because DOJ is not showing its hands now does not mean that they aren't collecting winning cards to play when they line up in an unbeatable hand.

The COVID war is an example of not caring about national interest along with the narrative created around the
Afghanistan withdrawal. The media is being a poor supporter of democracy.

(12,586 posts)Voters say, "Look at how well Biden and the Democrats are doing. Biden is doing just what he promised. We wake up each morning without the dread of, 'What insane is he going to do today?' People have more money in their pockets, with the promise of good paying jobs as the infrastructure gets worked on. Progress is being made on getting the pandemic under control. We're going to have childcare, medical care, free junior college, and so many other things to make our lives better and let us spend time with our families. We're hopeful again that we can live good lives, and that will be passed on to our children. We're tired of just trying to survive while billionaires take rocket rides, and he's showing us a way out. We like what President Biden is doing, and we like the low-key way he's doing it. Clearly, we are a hundred times better off under a Biden presidency.
"So let's vote to put the Repugs in a position to destroy all that. Yeah, that's the ticket!"

(11,566 posts)Too many Americans have forgotten (or never knew) how much good our government can do. Hats off to the Biden administration for their exceptional efforts in all our behalves. They are demonstrating what big things a Democratically-run government can accomplish.

(10,170 posts)Our American government is merely a tool for us to use.
Right now the filthy rich are using it to the detriment of the environment, democracy and a peaceful society.
But it is still there functioning,.doing so much we aren't aware of, and hardly think about. It is still doing great things because we pay our taxes and planned, years ago, for it to do these big things.
We can get back full control of this tool of government and getting out of a useless, costly war is a good start.
This country, our government can do anything we want it to.

(339 posts)Government is not a business and shouldn't be run like one. When the government works for the people, great things do happen for everyone, regardless of party. We as tax payers deserve the services we pay for. When the population is happy, everybody wins. Why is that so hard for those in power to understand?

(13,041 posts)airlifts of Afghan allies & their families? Given how they've treated the immigrants from south of the border seeking asylum here that's a definite NO. We would have another trumpian catastrophe and they would have left them to die under the Taliban regime. So any Dems criticizing Biden & his admin on the massive evac so far successful right now, think about that and don't be so eager to eat our own. I just saw Adam Schiff on Ari Melber show commenting that though he supported the POTUS' decision to pull out, there was a failure in military intelligence.
Adam, i love you & so grateful we have you in Congress, but PLEASE refrain from criticizing. We know there is no nonviolent solution w the taliban.

(3,856 posts)We have a President with decades of experience in government who knows how it works and has a record of getting things done. A politician, yes, but one with more than four decades of getting things done on behalf of people and making government work.
I knew, when I voted for Joe Biden, that this is what would happen, this is exactly what we needed and this is what we would get.
