8/25 1:26AM UPDATE: The COVID tests came back negative. She has the FLU.
While she is 98, the Flu can be fatal, especially if it places her on Oxygen and if she stays admitted.
It's something that hearing a 98-year-old woman having the Flu is now viewed as good news!
Still pissed at the Ex-SIL for being reckless and exposing her to the Flu. If she wore a mask and took the
standard alcohol precautions she probably would not have gotten it. Now, they might think she can be
released tomorrow, but just being in a hospital now is risky. IDK if they want to get her out of the
COVID risks or if they need to free up a bed, but it seems odd that they immediately rushed her back and
placed her on oxygen only to be released the next morning.
The kid's grandmother, my ex-wife's mother, spent 1.5 years in lockdown, only leaving the house just a few times. She would do walk around the neighborhood. The kids would take her to church with a mask on when there were no others in the church. Well, this lady's one daughter is a MAGA anti-vaxxer and took her to a crowded church service, and they did not wear masks because they didn't want to be the only ones in church wearing them. The grandmother is vaccinated, but has medical complications, such as diabetes.
Well, the grandmother knew she did wrong because she didn't tell my kids that she went to church, and now my kids are all possibly exposed to COVID because they just visited with her. The kids are pissed at their aunt and upset that their grandmother went to church without a mask, after taking it seriously up to this point. The grandmother was complaining about the inability to breathe today and was taken to the hospital by my Ex. The hospital staff thinks it's either COVID, COVID with pneumonia and or including blood clots. They do not think she will make it.

That is one motivation for doing what she did.

I know what's in the will, and who gets what. She'll be disappointed.
What's better, there's a poison pill in it that if anyone contests the will, their share gets reduced to just $1.

Unfortunately, my kids are besides themselves because she's the last living elder in both of our families.
They spend a lot of time with her on the phone and on visits, especially pre-COVID visits. She's a nice lady.

(21,691 posts)for anyone with underlying health conditions, or for vaccinated seniors who are more likely to have breakthrough infections than other vaccinated people. Not the worst place, but definitely not a safe place.
I belong to a liberal mainstream church. Not evangelistic. Among the members are several well educated professionals, including at least one doctor and one nurse. Before the vaccines they had strict guidelines for services - masks, distancing, no sharing of the peace, no singing, no passing out of bulletins or collection plates. I still did not go because they are a close knit group and couldn't stop shaking hands and hugging before and after services. They closed down for the winter because some members caught covid just before Christmas.
They dropped the masks and distancing when the CDC said masks were optional. They resumed the coffee social time after services. The youth group resumed in person meetings. I stayed away.
Now that my community is designated high infection rate by the CDC, the church has reinstated masks, but is allowing the choir to sing again. They are still having social hour after services (which requires removing masks to eat and drink). They are having outdoor picnics and social events. The youth group is still meeting in person.
They are not anti-maskers or anti-vaxxers. They just don't seem to "get it" about how dangerous delta is. They want to socialize like before.
I have not been inside the church or to their outdoor food events since March, 2020. I probably will not go back, even after my booster. I don't feel safe there.

(13,571 posts)Just as you have a thermometer.
A pulse oximeter costs about twenty bucks at any local pharmacy or off amazon delivery.
It is priceless information to have when there's a compromised family member.
Clip it on the finger. If it displays a number 90 or less, get immediate medical help.

(21,646 posts)travel with the pulse oximeter now.
Its small and as you said not too much $.
I had to have a covid test last week while away from home . It was negative but I was informed of contact exposure from back home, so I took a rapid test here
I would have to monitor progression myself and this could be needed if I got sick
Would I want to be out looking for one in an unfamiliar city if I got sick ? No
At least here they have an indoor mask mandate just like back home and most of the people are in compliance but you never know.
I did see on local TV they showed holy rollers in churches were defying it on Sunday just like this OP

(13,571 posts)It's little. And the flashing light will also let you know if you are having a heart rhythm disturbance if you watch it blink. I do have an occasional spell of tachycardia or missed beats, and the blinking light helps me know what's happening then.

(13,571 posts)The local hospital fundraiser profits went to buy a pulse oximeter for pediatric use. The price of the gadget then was more than $3,000.
And now we can get one for twenty bucks.

(25,919 posts)There will be an eclipse that year, 2045, that I hope to see. With any luck at all this pandemic will finally be over and I'll get to see that eclipse.
Oh, and the reason I'm so hot to see it, is that I got to see totality in 2017 in Ravenna, Nebraska, which was right in the center of totality. I'd seen my share of partial eclipses over the years, but trust me, totality is a whole different world. Anyway, I'm hoping to see the 2024 eclipse, as I have several friends in the Austin area who would probably take me in. But here's why I want to see the 2045 eclipse. Totality, in 2017 was a bit over 2 minutes. In 2045, depending on where you are, it will be five to six minutes. OMFG! I want to see that. Two plus minutes was amazing enough. Five or six minutes? Are you effing kidding me? I hope everyone here younger than I am makes sure they see the 2045 eclipse. It will be wonderful.
roamer65
(36,747 posts)Only about 40 miles from the path of totality in SE Michigan and NW Ohio.
I plan to go to Toledo and based on weather make the decision to go either SW or NE.
If I miss I am going to go to Australia in July 2028.
PoindexterOglethorpe
(25,919 posts)As I said before, I'd seen my share of partial eclipses in the past, including on annular eclipse, but as I learned in 2017, there is NOTHING like totality.
I now understand people that travel around the world to see total eclipses.

(36,747 posts)Got to see glimpses thru clouds, but the whole effect gave me an appetite for more.
Nothing will ever beat 5 June 2012 for me though.
I will never again set my eyes on a transit of Venus. I will be long dead by 2117.
Hell, most of the human race may be gone by 2117.

(25,919 posts)here in New Mexico. It was at the Balloon Museum in Albuquerque, which opened up specifically for that. Great museum.
But honestly, at the risk of being unintentionally dismissive, there is NOTHING like a total eclipse. As I have said above, I've seen my share of partials. Heck, one time several years ago I was driving from Santa Fe to Denver, and partway through the drive I realized I didn't need my sunglasses anymore. Hmmm. That seemed strange. But the sunlight just wasn't as bright as it should have been. After I checked into my hotel, I called My Son The Astronomer who then immediately demanded "Did you see the eclipse today?" I realized I'd totally forgotten about the partial eclipse that I was driving through. Duh.
The very first time I was aware of a solar eclipse, I knew it was happening and I knew I was well outside the path of totality. But I was struck by the difference in the sunlight where I was, and I've never forgotten. That difference was actually very obvious in the partial eclipse mentioned in the above paragraph.
I love all astronomical phenomena of all kinds. I sometimes walk outside, look at the night sky and then call My Son The Astronomer and ask him questions. He is truly wonderful in that he always answers all my questions. I'm a lucky mom.

PoindexterOglethorpe
(25,919 posts)I have not yet fully figured out my 2024 eclipse plans, but that will happen.
However, in the interest of long term planning, a while back I decided I needed to be in Washington, DC on July 4, 2026. I was on the Mall on July 4, 1976, and I figure I should be there some 50 years later. I already know the hotel I want to be in, which I won't name so as to hope they don't figure out what a gold mine they will be sitting on, but I'm probably being naive here.
Anyway, whatever I must pay for that hotel room, I'll pay. And I will tell every singe person I meet that I was there 50 years before. I intend to drag my son along. He was born in 1982, and I'm sure he'll be rolling his eyes the entire time. Some years back I told him he needed to plan to be on the Mall on July 4, 2076. He'll only be 93 years old. I can safely say only 93 because on his father's side they all live well into their 90s. He'll make it. Anyway, I've told him that when he's there in 2076 he needs to tell every single person he meets that he was there 50 years before, and both his parents were there 100 years before. His dad and I had not yet met, but we were both there.
I honestly think that would be beyond cool. Imagine meeting someone who could tell you that. And here's something even more interesting about that timeline. None of my four grandparents were born before 1880. Nor were any of my husband's grandparents born that early. And as it happens, all eight of them were born outside of this country. Mine were all born in Ireland, my husband's in eastern Europe. So none of them could have been at the Centennial of this country. But our son could easily live to the Tricentennail, and could talk about his parents being there a century earlier. How cool is that?

(25,661 posts)I have a story about male longevity. I did my DNA in 2017.
My mom is Scots-Irish and was an only child. She knew very little about her family. However, through DNA matches, I found that the extended family was extremely prolific. I quickly found my 3rd great grandfather and found out he served in the American Revolution. He died in 1853.
In the 1850 census he was living in my 2nd great grandfather's house in North Carolina.
My great grandfather was born in 1863 and lived in the same house as his grandfather, the Revolutionary War vet.
I wonder if he even knew or thought about his grandfather serving in the Revolutionary War? I wonder if he ever talked about it? My great grandfather left home and eventually picked oranges in Florida.
My mom never knew she had a 2nd great grandfather who was a Revolutionary War vet.
And here is something even funnier. My 3rd great grandfather had 24 living children with 2 women. He never married. One of his sons become a state senator in North Carolina. He used his connections to legitimize his kids:
(The petitioner) most respectfully submits to the consideration of the Legislature, whether it would be proper to visit his sins upon the head of his innocent offspring--more particularly as he has no legitimate children--they are as dear to him as tho (sic) they were born in wedlock; he has labored hard and acquired for them such amounts of property as will enable him to give to each of them, yet unprovided for a small beginning in the world, and in all other respects your petitioner is conscious (and indeed could shew (sic) to your honorable body were required) that he has uniformly demeaned himself as a good citizen. Your petitioner is now a very old man, and almost the last wish of his heart left unsatisfied, is that his children may be vested with all the rights of legitimacy. Your petitioner therefore prays your honorable body to pass a bill to that effect as in duty bound, etc.
This petition was entered as a bill in the General Assembly and was passed on it's first review.
xxxx served in the American Army during the Revolutionary war. His service was in both North and South Carolina. He served under General Thomas Brown and Captain John Yeats. In 1779, he is listed as a Private under Capt. John Yates and Col. Thomas Owen of the Bladen County Regiment. He served another tour, Captain and dates not identified. He was serving with a Militia Regiment in Wilmington under Major Jeremiah Cotgrave when the war ended.
My 3rd great grandfather's father ran away from home in Scotland and served as a cabin boy at age 10. His father supposedly encountered Blackbeard the Pirate when the ship was anchored offshore near Myrtle Beach.
