'This is deadly serious': Pelosi denounces congressmen's surprise trip to Kabul

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi on Wednesday joined the chorus of U.S. officials condemning Reps. Seth Moulton, D-Mass., and Peter Meijer, R-Mich., for secretly flying to Kabul in the middle of ongoing efforts to evacuate thousands of Americans and refugees following the Taliban's takeover of Afghanistan.

"This is deadly serious," Pelosi said during her weekly press conference on Capitol Hill. "We do not want members to go."

The House speaker said she has not spoken to either of the lawmakers since their return and is not sure whether the unauthorized visit would affect committee assignments.

"It was not, in my view, a good idea," Pelosi added.

The surprise trip by the lawmakers Tuesday angered the State Department, Defense Department and White House, prompting Pelosi to issue a letter warning members of Congress to "not travel to Afghanistan and the region during this time of danger."

"Ensuring the safe and timely evacuation of individuals at risk requires the full focus and attention of the U.S. military and diplomatic teams on the ground in Afghanistan," she wrote in the letter.

If he thinks this is going to help his political ambitions if he runs in 2024 if he has presidential ambitions, I think he will be sorely disappointed

The only thing he is doing with this grandstanding is getting in the way of the operation

They vote for the name they recognize, regardless of policies or qualifications. That's how we end up with people like Trump and Schwarzenegger elected, and why incumbents like McConnell, Issa, Nunes, etc keep being re-elected

House Dems, formerly with little name recognition outside of their district, who can get on fox news, can get nationally known - and raise more, and sometimes, much more campaign contributions.

And you are right about him. He did not have anything good to say about the President and the way things were trying to be handled. Every veteran thinks they know more about the situation than the generals. I respect their service but maybe they should think twice about undermining the administration and the Pentagon. Purely a selfish reason for going over and they should both be admonished in some way.

but I remember when in 2018 he was one of the representatives who tried to unseat Pelosi as Speaker, because she was "too old". I don't judge him entirely because of that, but this unauthorized trip to Afghanistan is not helping.

Perhaps he had good intentions, but in that case it indicates he has poor judgment. As former military, he should have known how reckless and dangerous this trip was. You'd also think he would put a higher value on following orders, like from the President and/or the Pentagon. More and more, it looks more like he was showboating.

(delaying by several minutes any clarification that he might have been referring to "over decades" and thus it was both "appropriate" and "courageous" for these a'holes to go.

Of course, the lingering impression he wanted to convey was that Biden admin was "lying through their teeth".

I want someone to ask all of them via some photos of those waiting or desperately traveling to be evacuated with their young children as to WhICH should be left behind for those two to get a seat.

Damned grandstanding stunt.

I don't think Reps. Moulton and Meijer would be high on my list of people I'd hope would set the record straight. But I guess it has been decided that all of the former guy's lies are imputed to President Biden; is that the way things work now?

Under Article I, Section 5, clause 2, of the Constitution, a Member of Congress may be removed from office before the normal expiration of his or her constitutional term by an “expulsion” from the Senate (if a Senator) or from the House of Representatives (if a Representative) upon a formal vote on a resolution agreed to by two-thirds of the Members of that body present and voting. While there are no specific grounds for an expulsion expressed in the Constitution, expulsion actions in both the House and the Senate have generally concerned cases of perceived disloyalty to the United States, or the conviction of a criminal statutory offense which involved abuse of one’s official position. Each house has broad authority as to the grounds, nature, timing, and procedure for an expulsion of a Member. However, policy considerations, as opposed to questions of authority, have appeared to restrain the Senate and House in the exercise of expulsion when it might be considered as infringing on the electoral process, such as when the electorate knew of the past misconduct under consideration and still elected or re-elected the Member.

Was for two grandstanding Congressmen to fly in on a surprise trip to that country during urgent evacuation efforts. There's no telling how many flights in and out of that airport had been disrupted by their plane landing and taking off just so they could have their quickie photo op or whatever the hell it was they thought they were doing.

Just who do they believe is going to be impressed by this? How did this stunt help the plight of Afghan refugees, women and girls, exactly? It was purely for their own egos!

The military is busy working to get as many people OUT of there as possible before the deadline. No, we do not need two useless bodies flying IN. A selfish distraction who took up two places on the return flight that could have been used by Afghan refugees. We only have until the 31st to get as many out as we can. This was a selfish act.
