The students were not in Afghanistan on a school trip. They were students/families who were originally from Afghanistan and CHOSE to go back there on their own (the parent's decision) during their summer vacation, presumably to visit extended family who still lived there. It had zero to do with the school, except that the students happened to attend the same school. The school was merely signal boosting their situation in the hopes that more attention to the story would result in them having a better chance of getting out.

8. I caught the end of msnbc saying the media has over stated how many

Americans are still left. And most US citizens have been contacted who want to leave. It was on Wallace show.
President Biden will probably address this as well.
