Associated Press: Inmates at a northwest Arkansas jail have been prescribed ivermectin to combat COVID-19, despite warnings from federal health officials that the antiparasitic drug should not be used to treat the coronavirus.

(3,858 posts)They were given the human formulation/dosage.
The horse pill jokes are funny but the drug is used regularly in humans and is being used to (try to) combat COVID in multiple countries.

(29,322 posts)First time I heard of Ivermectin India was using it and I wouldnt want to live in Modis country.
3 months later the Delta variant is in the US which was in India. I dont think any of this is funny and the disinformation is ugly. As far as the US Im glad Im fully vaccinated with the Pfizer vaccine.
It is horrible they are giving this to inmates.

Ivermectin for Covid-19: abundance of hype, dearth of evidence

The World Health Organization and the Infectious Diseases Society of America concur. Even Merck, an ivermectin manufacturer, avers that there is no meaningful evidence for clinical activity or efficacy in patients with Covid-19. And just last weekend the FDA warned people not to use the drug as a treatment for Covid-19.
Yet ivermectin boosters and merchants have convinced many to use this therapy for Covid-19, particularly in Latin America where its use is so widespread that researchers have had difficulty recruiting patients for trials of other potentially effective products. In June, YouTube suspended the account of Sen. Ron Johnson (R-Wis.), a member of the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee, for a week for spreading misinformation about ivermectin and hydroxychloroquine.
The increased demand for the drug, combined with enhanced scrutiny from pharmacists, has caused shortages of veterinary formulations of the drug. Inevitably, a spike in calls to Poison Control Centers connected to the use of veterinary ivermectin has followed.
The University of Oxfords rigorously designed PRINCIPLE trial is now trying to determine if ivermectin actually benefits people with Covid-19. But until those results come in, I urge people to heed the lessons of hydroxychloroquine, bleach, and all the other purported Covid-19 cures: effective treatments will be identified through systematic scientific study, not by wishful thinking, fabrication, or miracles.
(KWQC) - Could a livestock anti-parasitic medication cure or prevent COVID-19? The answer is still unknown, but doctors say you shouldnt rush to your local farm supply store.

Rumors of a magical cure to COVID-19 by way of Ivermectin started after an Australian study was released showing signs the drug killed the SARS-CoV-2 virus in 48 hours. The problem? It was only done in a laboratory setting, not in human patients. More research is needed to determine if it works the same in humans and to find a safe dosage.
According to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), Ivermectin is most commonly used as an anti-parasitic medication for cows and horses. It can also be used in humans to treat parasitic worms, and there are topical (on the skin) formulations for head lice and skin conditions like rosacea.
On Friday, August 20, 2021, Mississippi health officials warned against the use of Ivermectin, noting a rise in the number of calls to poison control from people ingesting Ivermectin. In fact, officials say at least 70% of the calls to the states poison control center were due to Ivermectin use. Officials say at least one person was hospitalized.

At this moment, a study is underway to evaluate the effectiveness of cheap, widely available drugs in low- and middle-income countries that can be repurposed for COVID-19. It includes Hydroxychloriquine, Lopinavir/ritonavir, Metformin, Fluvoxamine, and Ivermectin. Its currently funded by Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, Fast Grants, and the Rainwater Foundation. Researchers are looking to determine if a combination of drugs can be effective in treating COVID-19 in patients in countries where the vaccine is not readily available.
Pharmaceutical company Merck, which manufactures Ivermectin, and the FDA have issued warnings against using Ivermectin to treat or prevent COVID-19. In March of 2021, The World Health Organization issued a statement saying Ivermectin should only be used in clinical trials.
