FDA blocks sale of 55,000 flavored e-cigarette products

(CNN) The US Food and Drug Administration blocked the sale of more 55,000 flavored e-cigarette products Thursday, its first ban of e-cigarette products since it began requiring makers to apply for premarket review last September.

The FDA issued marketing denial orders for the electronic nicotine delivery system (ENDS) products, saying they pose a public health threat to youth in the US. Of the more than 55,000 products impacted by the decision, those not yet being sold may not be introduced into the market, and those already on the market must be removed or risk enforcement.

Advocates complained the action did not cover big name products such as Juul, but the agency said more decisions are coming.

"Ensuring new tobacco products undergo an evaluation by the FDA is a critical part of our aim to reduce tobacco-related disease and death," said Acting FDA Commissioner Dr. Janet Woodcock. "We know that flavored tobacco products are very appealing to young people, therefore assessing the impact of potential or actual youth use is a critical factor in our decision-making about which products may be marketed."

9. Smoking tobacco can kill people.

I read posts on DU that unvaccinated people should not be allowed in hospitals then the same should be for smokers who have cancer. And what about very obese people with heart problems or people hit by a car when crossing the street against the light or while texting.

Huge win for big cigarette companies if all anyone can get moving forward is way friggin expensive, crappy-ass products like JUUL and Vuse.

All such products are brands owned by the cigarette companies.

All readily available and super cheap. Your costs will be nickels and dimes per week. You will know exactly what is in it.

Also, will FDA crack down on people selling diluted nicotine as well? I could see it happening.

Also ... what if it's not just juice, but mods and coils and stuff?

Maybe, I guess, they could require a license to buy nicotine…I don’t see that happening though. Gardeners use it.

Of course. This isn't about protecting anybody. This is about going after indie shops and smaller businesses, and leaves Big Tobacco still free and clear selling the vape stuff THEY make. This is about protecting tobacco corporations' share of the dwindling market.

They might even get lots of people switching back to cigarettes, if they can't get the less harmful product (note I am NOT saying it's harmless. It is undeniably less harmful, and I'm big on harm reduction). That would be a win for them!

11. Then get rid of flavored alcohol.

This war on e-smokes is just a way to make sure smokers can’t quit so anti-smokers can continue yelling at them and tobacco can continue getting people hooked. If everyone finally quit by switching to e-cigs or e-cigars, the anti-smokers wouldn’t get their daily shaming fix and big tobacco would be out of cash.

What do we want? To shame smokers!

What do we not want? For them to quit!

What do we gotta do? Pretend e-smoking is the devil and pretend flavors for it are attractive to kids, while we don’t care about blue-raspberry flavored vodka!
