Inside the anti-democratic calls for Bidens ouster
Its no doubt been a difficult two weeks for the Biden administration as they work round-the-clock to evacuate remaining Americans and allies from Afghanistan. Its been a mess, and not one solely of their own making. As they continue to move forward and remain laser-focused on the task at hand, familiar suspects like Ben Shapiro, Breitbart, and the Daily Caller have been attempting to throw them off course, score political points, and weaken our democracy in the process with bogus calls for impeachment or removal.
It all began with the troll-in-chief, former President Donald Tr*mp, rearing his ugly head on August 16th to bizarrely call for President Bidens resignation. Considering the former president says stupid things all the time, many brushed off his comments as typical bluster. But, perhaps predictably so, over the past week at least 29 members of the House of Representatives and 4 sitting U.S. Senators have followed suit in making their anti-democratic intentions known by calling for the President to either be impeached, resign, or removed from office.
Heres our unofficial count:
House members:
Claudia Tenney (R-NY), Lee Zeldin (R-NY), Byron Donalds (R-FL), Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA), Andy Biggs (R-AZ), Kevin Hern (R-OK), Greg Steube (R-FL), Ronny Jackson (R-TX), Tom Rice (R-SC), Jody Hice (R-GA), Roger Williams (R-TX), Michael Cloud (R-TX), Mark Green (R-TN), Jeff Van Drew (R-NJ), Barry Loudermilk (R-GA), Greg Murphy (R-NC), Mike Garcia (R-CA), Diana Harshbarger (R-TN), Brian Babin (R-TX), Chip Roy (R-TX), Louie Gohmert (R-TX), Lauren Boebert (R-CO), Jim Jordan (R-OH), Vicky Hartzler (R-MO), Mo Brooks (R-AL), Andy Harris (R-MD), Elise Stefanik (R-NY), Barry Moore (R-AL), Jeff Duncan (R-SC)
Senators:
Sen. Rick Scott (R-FL), Sen. Marsha Blackburn (R-TN), Sen. Josh Hawley (R-MO), Sen. Lindsay Graham (R-SC)
Look - these are not serious people. The four Senators that have called for impeachment or removal almost certainly all have 2024 Presidential aspirations. The House members are many of the same folks who refused to certify the electoral college results. But by our analysis, it is unprecedented for so many members of Congress to so flippantly call for a Presidents removal of office, especially in the middle of a foreign policy crisis - welcome to the new normal.

(11,744 posts)Conservatives, at the end of the day, know that their policies and their ideas do not serve the majority of the people. They work for a very few, very wealthy people. They also know that media shapes the narrative in the minds of most people.
Knowing that, their purpose isn't to have a debate, discussion, or dialog about anything serious. Their purpose is to make noise, to make their numbers seem much larger than they are, and in that sense, instill a sense of hopelessness or apathy in the much larger, but much less motivated segment of the population who know that Republicans are full of shit.
They can't win on ideas, so they win on process. They win by making people think that nothing makes a difference. Why vote? Why support Democrats? They aren't perfect. They aren't going to give you 100% of what you want. They aren't going to make your life instantly better in any significant way. Look, Biden let terrorists blow up American soldiers. Democrats suck because they can't stop everything bad from happening in the world. Nevermind that we Republicans actively screw everything up, Democrats don't fix it fast enough. That should be all you need to give us power so that we can...well don't worry about that.
Think about how the stories came out just a few days ago, "The worst thing in military history" Really? Worse than when the British burned down the White House? Worse than when 400,000 Americans and 350,000 Confederate traitors died in 4 years on American soil? Worse than 280 American Marines dying in Beirut from a terrorist attack? The media for whatever reason, accepts the narrative and gives the idiots way more coverage than the counterpoint, because..."well the minority party needs a voice". Then when Republicans are in control..."well, they are in charge so we have to listen to what they say."

(11,744 posts)Definitely confront the source too, but the media gives the idiots the spotlight way too often and way beyond the validity of their argument.
Presenting their ideas as "Just an opposing viewpoint" assumes they are arguing in good faith. They are not, never have, and never will.
Media needs to be called out on this in major ways.

Snip.
On May 18, 2021, at a U.S. House of Representatives Foreign Affairs Committee hearing on U.S. policy in Afghanistan, Khalilzad downplayed the prospect of a swift Taliban takeover when U.S. forces leave saying, If they [Taliban] pursue, in my judgment, a military victory, it will result in a long war, because Afghan security forces will fight, other Afghans will fight, neighbors will come to support different forces. He later added at that same hearing, I personally believe that the statements that the [Afghan] forces will disintegrate, and the Talibs will take over in short order are mistaken. The real choices that the Afghans will face is between a long war and negotiated settlement.[35][36] Despite this statement, the 2021 Taliban offensive culminated in a swift Taliban takeover and the dissolution of the Afghan National Army.

(22,808 posts)Murphy is the representative for North Carolinas 3rd congressional district and is a Republican. He has served since Sep 17, 2019. Murphy is next up for reelection in 2022 and serves until Jan 3, 2023.
Murphy introduced 1 bill that became law, including via incorporation into other measures, in the 116th Congress.
S. 3260: A bill to designate the facility of the United States Postal Service located at 3703 North Main Street in Farmville, North Carolina, as the Walter B. Jones, Jr. Post Office.
