General Discussion
Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsWell... that makes TWO covid deaths in my extended family in a single week.
Please do NOT offer condolences. 1) I'd never met them; 2) they were by-marriage relatives; and 3) both deaths were anti-vax idiots. Until this week I knew of nobody in my immediate or extended family who had contracted covid. Now, just like that... zap-zap... TWO are dead.
One lived in Central Florida, and the other lived in Central Georgia... both wore red hats and had red necks (you know, from being in the sun too much) and both were delusional that "Jesus would protect them" and they were "leaving it all up to God". One in her late 50's one in his late 60's... both healthy, until.
As I read the words of sympathy on their FB pages... the messages definitely have a fundamentalist flavor or aroma about them. "God needed another angel for the choir." --- "Glory be to God, she's out of pain." --- "God is good." --- "He's having a beer with Jesus." (Ugh! Seriously?)
Nevertheless, it's certainly a strong reminder and warning-shot to other family members within who know them (or, KNEW them) that things are getting worse and Jesus is NOT going to protect you.

(32,969 posts)If I could have a beer with Jesus
Heaven knows I'd sip it nice and slow
I'd try to pick a place that ain't too crowded
Or gladly go wherever he wants to go
You can bet I'd order up a couple tall ones
Tell the waitress put "em on my tab
I'd be sure to let him do the talkin'
Careful when I got the chance to ask
How'd you turn the other cheek
To save a sorry soul like me
Do you hear the prayers I send
What happens when life ends
And when you think you're comin' back again
I'd tell everyone, but no one would believe it
If I could have a beer with Jesus
If I could have a beer with Jesus
I'd put my whole paycheck in that jukebox
Fill it up with nothing but the good stuff
Sit somewhere we couldn't see a clock
Ask him how'd you turn the other cheek
To save a sorry soul like me
Have you been there from the start
How'd you change a sinner's heart
And is heaven really just beyond the stars
I'd tell everyone, but no one would believe it
If I could have a beer with Jesus
He can probably only stay, for just a couple rounds
But I hope and pray he's stayin' till we shut the whole place down
Ask him how'd you turn the other cheek
To save a sorry soul like me
What's on the other side?
Is mom and daddy alright?
And if it ain't no trouble tell them I said hi
I'd tell everyone but no one would believe it
If I could have a beer with Jesus
I'd tell everyone but no one would believe it
If I could have a beer with Jesus

(112,150 posts)The story in the Bible doesn't say that Jesus turned water into beer.
I think in the New Revised Standard Version it says "pale ale".
But in the footnotes is says at the time that same terminology was used for a wine spritzer.

Beer did exist. It was a staple alcoholic beverage in Egypt for centuries. Can't blame the israelites for disdaining it. Too many mamories of slavery.

(3,495 posts)and the Jews, who Jesus was descended from, were slaves of Pharaoh. So wouldn't drinking a beer with Jesus be kind of a slight?
I donna know...people who claim to know what Jesus would do or think seem pretty pretentious to me.

We were tee totaling Baptists, man! Jesus drink beer? No way!
I am not even kidding. I remember being taught in Sunday school that all the references to wine in the New Testanent are really talking about grape juice. I swear to God!
My mother is deceased, but if she were alive today, she would be shocked by that song. Shocked, I tell you!

(15,220 posts)Im sorry for their stupidity and their fear and distrust. But with all of the sadness right now, theres just not a lot available for those unwilling to do what they can to protect themselves and others. Its not about their freedom. Its about their responsibility to the rest of us.

(3,149 posts)I mean I see it as cleaning the gene pool. My only 'thoughts and prayers are with the survivors; that's never fun. Two of my best friends/family members basically died from partying way too hard, even though everyone had warned them. Both were 29. Completely fucking stupid amounts of drugs and booze involved, self-inflicted by any reasonable definition; but it sure was hard on the parents and brothers and sisters, that's all I'm saying.
Having lost my sister to this about a year and a few months ago, I really don't give a shit about any moron who doesn't vaxx (when they could) and/or doesn't mask up, good fucking riddance on an overpopulated planet..
NurseJackie
(42,862 posts)My attitude about the rest who refuse vaccines and masks is one that can be summed up with a quote from Ebenezer Scrooge:
If they would rather die, said Scrooge, they had better do it, and decrease the surplus population.

(42,862 posts)One cousin-in-law trusted Jesus and got Covid. He got sick, but not sick enough to need a hospital, then recovered. In the meantime, he gave it to his wife, his mother, and his two kids. Three of them went into the hospital only two came out. His mother died.
In her most last FB post (before being admitted to the hospital) she was still posting about "the only way into Heaven is threw Jesus" (sic) ... could be a typo, could be a voice-to-text error... but I doubt it.
It's fucked up. Maybe others in their hyper-religious circles will learn. I doubt it, though.
They'll justify it with absurd platitudes like "God needed another angel for his choir" bullshit. It may make them feel better, but it's ridiculous. No personal responsibility at ALL! They put it all back on "God" and it's what "he wanted".

(42,307 posts)But I live in rural red Florida. I make the mistake of reading the Facebook comments on posts from our local paper.
I don't know what to call this - mass delusion, insanity - I just have no words. But when today's wonderful ruling came down knocking out Gov. DeathSentence's dangerous no mask mandate in schools ruling, the comments were just completely bonkers.
We had schools open last year (SO is a HS teacher). Kids wore masks. They didn't complain, they didn't act out, their parents didn't assault people - they wore the damn masks. The infection rate was low.
1 month in and its going higher and higher. And I'm still seeing idiots praising the Gov to the skies.

(42,307 posts)Can't figure out DeathSentence's strategy. From what I'm reading, he really is killing off his voters.
SO is wearing his mask in class all day. His students are happy to mask up if he asks them.

Mark the personal possessions in the house that you want to go to specific people so that Cousin Jim and Uncle Harry don't get in a fist fight over some tchotchke. And what music do you want at your funeral or memorial service?

(42,862 posts)I'm reminded of the stories I hear about sheriffs who are tasked with trying to evacuate residents who won't leave their homes (fire, hurricane, etc)
In conceding defeat, I've heard that they hand to them a sharpie with instructions to "write your name and loved one's name on your body so we'll know who to call".
