I just heard from my sister, who is traveling with her husband on family business in another state. They started their trip uneventfully and are on their way back home. Sadly, my bro-in-law became sick and is getting worse. Bad cough, fever and screaming headache that won't respond to meds. Yep, in all likelihood COVID. Neither is vaccinated, despite my sister being a super-intelligent healthcare worker who knows how viruses and vaccines work. They are unrepentant evangelical conservatives and supported Trump even in the 2nd election.
Today I receive what would normally be a wonderful photo of my sister at a popular tourist attraction. The picture was taken by said very sick husband and it shows people walking around them. When I spoke with her I asked why they were at a tourist attraction when he was sick, she responded, "Well, we wore our masks." They had planned to spend the night with a friend but decided when the husband got sick that they would go to a hotel instead. My sister said, "I guess we'll take the chance of giving it to hotel staff rather than our friends." I was dumbfounded. How can anyone be so thoughtless?
So, they have checked into the hotel and my sister has asked her husband repeatedly if he wants to go to urgent care. Apparently he has refused and she told him that if he got much sicker it wouldn't be his choice. How heroic of her. That they can be so passive about this shocks me to no end.
That's all. I hope he doesn't have COVID. I hope he gets tested. And I hope by the grace of whatever that they manage to not kill anyone in their idiocy.
And this is how it spreads.

(8,914 posts)If they get sick, they'll say, "We did everything right and we still got sick,
We didn't go to any large crowds or super spreader events."
"We don't know how we got covid."
And they're right, they won't know how they go it.

(40,209 posts)I am so grateful no one in my family is like that. I know people who have relatives like that and it is hard to deal with them.
I hope your BIL is ok. There are those here who have said harsh things about the unvaccinated, and I also think they are stupid selfish idiots who are endangering others, but I dont want to wish bad things for anyone.

(47,014 posts)I recently traveled across three southern states and one midwestern states here in the US.
Very few masks anywhere to be seen. And in the southern states people seeing me wear a mask
resulted in hate glares from them. I had to travel for family issues, so stayed out of public as much as possible.
It was not safe on many levels.

(4,170 posts)Plenty of masks being worn, and nobody has ever hate-glared at me.
Of course, I pay no attention to strangers anyway.

Maybe they only glare at strangers and northerners.

(54,370 posts)It is now almost 8:30 Monday morning. I am in a train headed west to Brussels, and we are just passing the German-Belgian border. It the train stations I was at, as well as in the trains, NO ONE was unmasked. Everyone is wearing one. Of course, they will toss you from the train at the next stop with cops waiting if you refuse to wear one, so anyone who has a serious desire to arrive at their destination wears a mask.

(12,051 posts)thoughtlessness, the deliberate attempts to infect others with COVID (that's what that teacher was doing, and that traveling sister and BIL), the vicious racism and sexism, the leering mobs, the sneaky fucks with their masks under their noses --- it's all a sign. A bad sign. A sign that our society is actually breaking down in front of our eyes.

(47,014 posts)an end to the social contract.
Yes it is happening right in front of our eyes.
The GOP is causing it. Trump and Covid has revealed the extend of the GOP rot in our country.
And the Dems cannot believe what we are seeing. We cannot wrap our heads around it yet.

but your sister being a super-intelligent healthcare worker who knows how viruses and vaccines work.
is being horribly irresponsible and has no business being in the HC industry
especially if she said this
"I guess we'll take the chance of giving it to hotel staff rather than our friends."
only a person devoid of any empathy or conscience
a sociopath would have that thought process.
I am sorry you have to deal with that. Im lucky I dont. If anyone one in my family or friends was like that they would be PNGd permanently.

(1,910 posts)Sorry, if I had a family member who voted for him in 2020, it would be all over. Anyone who voted for him in 2020 was trying to overthrow democracy and destroy the climate and take away Obamacare, give our secrets to Putin, etc.
How anyone can associate in any way, shape, or form with a 2 time MAGA voter is beyond me. I would disown even a parent or sibling who did that.
They tried to destroy my kid's future, so why would I ever speak to them again?

(34,051 posts)illinois gov is mandating health care workers get vaccines and has a deadline date. not sure, but he might have said if they don't want to get vaxxed they have to get tested (once or twice a week).
either way, if that bil has covid you should notify her place of employment and let them know so they can test her and send her home so she doesn't infect other staff or patients.
at least that is what i think i would do. then again, i don't have a sister.

Had a guy in my face saying he wasn't going to wear a mask or get vaccinated because the fatality rate was lower than some flus.
I attempted to make the point that if he did get sick, he'd be in hospital taking up an ICU bed making it unavailable for someone else having a heart attack or been in an accident.
He had no idea what I was talking about.
