my thought too... that sod will lay back down nicely. plant a nice young tree in the spot

Cut the tree out, set the sod back in place, and soon it will look like nothing dramatic ever happened there.

It's like this tree just got planted and hadn't spread its roots yet?
I can only guess, but most tree roots go as deep into the ground as the highest branches go up off the ground.
