As coronavirus hospitalizations surge again because of the Delta variant, America's hospitals are dealing with another obstacle: 1 in 8 nurses haven't gotten a COVID-19 vaccine or don't plan to get one, a new survey finds, potentially squeezing the already low supply of health workers.
The American Nurses Association surveyed nearly 5,000 nurses across the US in order to learn more about the questions and concerns they have about the vaccine. 25% of the nurses surveyed said they do not trust or are unsure that the coronavirus vaccines available are safe and effective. Out of those who do not intend to get vaccinated, 84% said that there was not enough information about the long-term effects of the vaccine.
Health experts have repeatedly said that vaccines are doing a very good job keeping people alive, out of the hospital, and healthy, and that any negative side-effects would be evident within a couple months after administration.
A majority of the nurses surveyed were hospital workers in medium to large hospitals with 100 to over 1,000 beds and 71% provide direct care to patients at the facilities.

Long term effect? You're less likely to be attached to a ventilator and or infect others.

(58,785 posts)Despicable.
But in the real world I wish counseling with stronger standards were options right now. As we see, a person can have the ability to set up treatment algorithm but not be insightful and honest enough with themselves to realize what's very wrong about what they're doing on their own. If things hadn't gone so dreadfully wrong on such a large scale, they would have been required to meet professional standards.

Also if they have such bad judgement about their own health and don't care about the health of their patients, I am not sure counseling will be successful. Before I retired, I had contact with these kind of health care professionals, who just did their own thing. It was almost impossible to get them to follow standard of care.

(2,398 posts)One of the reasons people go into nursing is to comfort the sick.
Some of those folks might not have the science to do the actual job.

(23,539 posts)Governor Pritzker last Thursday.
Also every teacher and professor in the state has to be vaccinated.
In Chicago every city employee has to be vaccinated.
Nurses and police officers are freaking out.
I believe many will leave for other states. The delta came here late. Our government here is trying to stop delta before we become like Florida. We have the same vaccination rate as Florida 53% fully vaxxed. We just got Delta later.

(10,186 posts)Lots of other jobs should require it too. The workplace can have rules. I used to have to wear a hairnet when I worked in a meat plant. I didnt like it but it was the rule. I think the requirement had legal standing as well. Seat belts, no driving while intoxicated, steel toed work boots, etc. just quit whining and get on board an this could be the last surge, but its not going to happen.

(1,527 posts)Now that the full approval is issued the hospital she works for is going to require the vaccination.
I see her discussions of facebook and she believe some Doctors BS about some negative effects. Basically she will have to quit or get the vaccine now.
With hundreds of millions of doses given, I just do not get the logic.
She does have two kids under 10 in school, and I think Delta will sweep through everybody. My mother had covid back in January/February and survived by she is 87 and has permanent damage to her health.
One thing I would say in my nephews wife defense is that 10 years ago she had to get the Swine Flu vaccine when she was over 8 months pregnant and lost the baby within days of getting the shot because the placenta detached, possibly as an immune reaction, but who knows. But she is not pregnant now.

(205,288 posts)For anyone who works there. Both of my friends who work there got the Pfizer back in January, they had to drive downstate to a major hospital to get it, but were given a $100 bonus for doing it. They were the first people I knew to get vaccinated. Anyone who didn't take advantage of this offer - or get it for free in any pharmacy locally - is now out of a job unless they get it PDQ.

(59 posts)I work in a hospital in a non-clinical role. I was able to receive my first shot in December. I remember feeling extremely guilty about getting it, as I didn't want to take it from a nurse or doctor. Never did I imagine that any healthcare worker who lived through the horror of 2020 in healthcare would not want it.
