Homes look like 1980's built starter tract homes but not I would not consider them to be very poor....Plenty of cars....
Most appear to be 3 bedroom, 2 bath single garage homes..A few streets have duplexes.

transportation or places to evacuate to during big hits like this? Nobody should be left behind who doesn't want to stay behind. There should be a way to evacuate everyone and get them to a safe shelter. This is bullshit!

Lack of fuel. Invalids and handicapped and elderly being cared for at home. Hotels full and can't afford. No place to go. Family in hospitals. Emergency workers. Many reasons!

MASSIVE undertaking, trying to evacuate hundreds of thousands of people, and on short notice.

or friends who can't evacuate need them, too many people rely on them, they can't leave their job/need to be on call, etc. If you think people *want* to ride out a hurricane and struggle through the immediate aftermath, then yes, you're missing quite a bit.

and stay to “protect” their house. My uncle was one of those in a previous hurricane. He’s a Lt. Colonel, very well off. He stayed to “protect his home from black looters”. No sympathy for people like that.

evacuation orders. That parish had voluntary evacs in certain areas.

This hurricane behaved much, much differently than most. First, it was very powerful to begin with. But it was strengthening at landfall and then it took 10 whole hours after landfall before it started dying. And it stalled. It's bad news for that area.

Add three or four days of being away from home to a week or more of no power, road washouts and closures. It's a nightmare trying to get home. If you do have money for gas to get away you don't always have money for hotels or whatever shelter you need for who knows how many days. The logistics aren't that cut and dried. I hope your sister is safe now. ❤

I heard stories of people driving back and getting stuck because they couldn't get in their neighborhood...

Add to it, possible damage to your home and you can't put a "blue tarp" up...stuff like that....

My sister now lives in a senior high rise. Her husband died in 2013. Her home had water damage due to drainage issues, so she sold it. She moved into some apartments, but those got flooded during Harvey. So, she picked up and moved into a high rise....It isn't cheap though...
