Drone strike in Afghanistan was "ninja bomb" no explosion just blades.

WASHINGTON—The Pentagon used a special Hellfire missile that packs no explosives to strike Islamic State militants in Afghanistan on Saturday in retaliation for a suicide bomb attack at the Kabul airport last week, according to two U.S. officials.

The missile used by the U.S. in the airstrike, called an R9X, is inert. Instead of exploding, the weapon ejects a halo of six large blades stowed inside the skin of the missile, which deploy at the last minute to shred the target of the strike, allowing military commanders to pinpoint their target and reduce the possibility for civilian casualties.

The use of the special Hellfire missile, which inside the military is referred to colloquially as “the flying Ginsu,” recalling the popular knives sold on TV infomercials in the 1970s, hadn’t been disclosed. The weapon also has been dubbed the “ninja bomb.”

which is going to detonate just about anything flammable or explosive. I think this is a bit of psychological warfare. Getting shredded by a flying buzz saw is creepier than being blown up.

Providing the Pentagon with nearly endless supplies of money has benefitted the world so much.

The interesting and novel methods of killing people they devise will be a boon to all humankind. I'm surprised there's not a Nobel Warfare Prize, for if there were, the U.S. would have a trophy case packed full of Nobel Medals.

I get that you were being sarcastic.

That’s really why I posted this. Of all the things we could focus energy, expertise, and money on we are still coming up with even better ways of killing and harming each other. It’s just bewildering.

I appreciate the civilian casualties thing. No really I do but GAWD isn’t there some other thing that we could be doing?

Because without research into new weapons like this one they would have used a WWII era 500lbs or 1,000lbs bomb to get the job done with possibly 100's of nearby casualties.

Somewhere someone thought...what if we just dropped a running lawnmower on a target? Or something like that.
