Their aim is to stay in office regardless of the cost.

If they plead the 5th and refuse to testify, they'll get rightly crucified in the next election. There's a perception that only extremely guilty people take the 5th.

And that's not going to play well to Democrats, Independents, or Republicans.

The Trumpists don't think they did anything wrong so having a Representative or a Senator "admit" he did something wrong by taking the 5th (and anyone taking that strategy would have to take the 5th repeatedly) would be very much going off the Trumpy reservation.

I think the Trumpists would respect someone who brazenly lies with big bold lies but would have contempt for those who meekly admit they did something wrong.

It depends a lot on what's on the tapes.

If there's enough to nail him to the wall with only the tapes, reading the tapes will be enough.

If the tapes just show he's connected to some unsavory constituents and made some intriguing and tantalizing comments but nothing definitive, they'll have to try to draw him out during testimony to say something either legally damning or politically damning.

Ideally both but we rarely get the ideal....
