Chicago Police Supt. David Brown said Monday he is waiting for more information before deciding whether to discipline a police officer seen in a viral video restraining a woman who was walking a dog at North Avenue Beach.
Lawyers for the woman, who is Black, have called the altercation with the white officer an obvious case of racial profiling.
Brown wouldnt comment on the allegation, saying only that there was some closure of the beach that preceded this interaction. Thats the extent of what we know. We dont have an arrest, apparently, by this officer. And we dont fully understand because we havent interviewed this officer yet.
Brown said the woman in the video hasnt been interviewed either.
The superintendent said the investigation is being conducted by the Civilian Office of Police Accountability, which looks into allegations of police misconduct. Brown said he is awaiting a briefing from COPA before considering whether to place the officer on desk duty or strip his police powers during the investigation.

(4,660 posts)I couldn't have calmly filmed that. I would have gone crazy yelling at him to stop. But, I am white. The filmer may not have had the protection of that privilege.

(2,023 posts)This is one of my pet peeves, people saying "filming" when they're obviously using a cellphone that does not have any film in it. Does anybody use cameras with film in them any more? It bugs me when they say "videotaping" too because nobody uses videotape any more, either. We all should use language that accurately describes what's going on.
And yes, that cop's behavior shows that he is not fit to be exercising police power over anybody. He should be fired at the very least. I wish we could hear what was being said between them just before he let her go. If she tests positive for the virus, she should sue the Chicago police and that cop specifically.
He especially should have respected her space. I'm a white guy and it's been 15 years since the last time I got pulled over, but if I were to be pulled over now, I would not allow the cop to approach me and would not roll down my car window unless he a) was vaccinated, and b) was wearing a mask. Otherwise I would tell him to call for another officer who met those criteria. Of course, this woman did not have that option because she was on foot. Still, it was perfectly appropriate for her to try to prevent his approach because he was unmasked. And he should have respected that.

(28,817 posts)Does he mean none of them looked at a 2 minute video? Geez why do we begin to hate police? Because they keep on giving us reason after reason.
Me.

(149,614 posts)Outrageous behavior on the cop's part. Completely out of line. She was walking her dog!
And then he grabbed her, to what end, I have no idea.
Good gawd.
My best to the woman and her dog.

(9,988 posts)For every one of these horrific incidents that gets filmed and circulated online - and there are too many, WAY too many - there must be hundreds if not thousands that we never hear about. It wouldn't be so widespread if cops didn't have a deep-rooted culture of racist gang violence with assumed impunity.

(67,108 posts)I don't trust them. Yep, I know there are good ones ... but there are also so many bad cops ... and often other cops and police unions cover for the bad ones.

(1,364 posts)Name names???? Who is he???? It is amazing to me that mug shots of black men and women make the front page of newspapers for shoplifting, but we can't even get the name of this assaulter. I think he "got off" on grabbing her, had it been in a dark area, I think this would be a different story.

(1,364 posts)Most attorneys will take this case on contingency, crush this scum. Take all his money and make sure he never works in a position of authority again, his family will leave him and he will be an outcast. She was in clear danger of being beaten and raped by this cop - in my opinion.
