(2,769 posts)I worked for newspapers for years and have seen my share of un-proofed copy. But the worst was a double-paged spread advertising men's suits on sale at a large mall store.
Only problem the 60 point type at the top of the page said "men's s**ts"

(9,995 posts)once regaled me with the story of a local hardware store in his home town that took out a double page ad proclaiming "SELLING OUT TO THE BARE BALLS!"

(7,428 posts)Some of the biggest problems newspapers face are from the for-profit model. It incentivizes not just sensationalism but exploitation of workers. Longtime beat reporters get axed for younger versions who can be paid less. Editors get shaved away. As it becomes a battle to maintain the desires of those atop the structure, the paper itself suffers.

Flattery and access are tools for prying journalists away from their mission.

(20,587 posts)Not just on the internet but so much of all kinds of text are either getting proofread or bad grammar is getting slack and acceptable.

Like, for instance, on Saturday I was a-platin away when I saw an AP story about the military that said something about 2500 solders doing something. To the phone I went: Look Joel, weve got a line in the fourth paragraph that says 2500 solders. Im going to put a D in that word. Copy desk was very happy.
