will 'never be used again'The last US military aircraft have departed Hamid Karzai International Airport in Kabul, ending nearly two decades of war in Afghanistan, Gen. Frank McKenzie, the head of US Central Command, said Monday afternoon.
Asked about military equipment left behind at the airport, McKenzie said that some was brought out. Other systems were "demilitarized," meaning US forces purposely broke them to prevent them from being used.
The counter rocket, artillery, and mortar (C-RAM) systems, which were used to fend off a rocket attack on the airport on Monday, were kept online until the last minute and then demilitarized.
"We demilitarized those systems so that they'll never be used again," McKenzie said. "We felt it more important to protect our forces than to bring those systems back."

That still won't stop the RWNJs from saying we armed the Taliban.

The young volunteer American troops who gave it all protecting and rescuing civilians should be memorialized forever as Heroes.

But, just think of those mansions war contractors were able to buy.
I agree with your assessment.

(19,564 posts)It's still a damn shame the US wasted billions of dollars over 20-years on defense spending to arm the now defunct Afghan army. Which is a completely separate issue from these few demilitarized pieces of equipment.
Ultimately the Afghan war was a waste of lives, time, money and other resources. The only true winners here were the military contractors and private militias. They banked massively at the expense of many allied lives lost both to combat deaths, and PTSD after the fact.
It was a fools errand from the beginning. I'm glad we're out, finally, thanks to Biden.
