Florida is refusing to pay monthly salaries to school board members in counties that defied Gov. Ron DeSantis to introduce mask mandates on their campuses. The state’s Department of Education confirmed the move Monday, saying it had “withheld the monthly school board member salaries in Alachua and Broward County” because of the mask mandates, which it said “violate parental rights by not allowing a parent or legal guardian to opt-out their child.” The statement added that the salaries will not be paid until the districts abandon their mandates. The move came despite a court ruling last week that school districts can enforce temporary mask mandates to help stop the spread of COVID-19. Broward County Public Schools Interim Superintendent Vickie Cartwright said late Monday that the county will continue its mask requirements, saying: “The health and safety of our students, teachers, and staff continue to be our main priorities.”

based upon "parental rights" instead of being mandated by law.

How sick that people risk the health of children and people in their communities to advance their political goals.

Major federal lawsuit and major federal charges for trying to disrupt governmental function. Plus, make sure that all those parents who will shortly be without a functioning school system know who is responsible. (Hint for all those parents out there who can't quite understand what is going on... it is DeSantis. He is risking your children's lives and future for political points from people who do not care about you or your children. REMEMBER THIS!)

If he had any intelligence, He would have taken the court ruling and told people: "My hands are tied. I tried." He could still campaign as a "freedom fighter" or whatever and let the school districts mandate masks and make education in Florida a safer place for kids and adults.

Instead, he's tripling down, and he's going to look terrible for it.

More kids will get sick, and he'll be the reason why.

Hold everyone involved in the decision to hold back pay in contempt. Lock their aspics up indefinitely. The rule of law either means something or it means nothing. TFG guy has yet to be held to account, thus his mini-me’s are just following his playbook. Make them (and him) pay dearly.

Magats are going to school board meetings across the country and threatening school board members with harm if they vote to mandate masks, and they get away with it. I'm assuming that law enforcement is probably Magat also.

Here in Illinois, Pritzker has signed 2 EOs. Now, nothing in the realm is up to the school board.
State mandate, and if nutty parents complain, the district can just say "We have to follow the law. It's not up to us."
And, no change for Pritzker because that type didn't vote for him anyway, and they wouldn't in the future.
They hate him now. They hated him anyway.
So, he is unaffected and the school board is off the hook.

https://ballotpedia.org/School_board_salaries_in_America%27s_largest_school_districts

"According to the National School Boards Association, school board members are typically volunteers who receive no annual compensation.

75 percent of small-district school board members receive no salary
Less than 40 percent of large-district school board members work more than 40 hours per month on board-related duties in return for a salary[1]"

I'm curious how much of a "stick" this is to those boards. Given that a lot of people do it for free it seems like we'd be able to find some pro-science people who could step in if money is a factor.

#DeathSantis is very very confident with this maneuver and the outright barbarity of his policies.

He knows this is killing people.

He's not stupid, just maniacally ambitious. Where are the polling numbers coming from that's telling him (and Abbot, Noem etc) that this is a winning strategy?

The Florida Department of Education has started withholding salaries of school board members in violation of Gov. Ron DeSantis’ (R-FL) ban on mask mandates, despite a judge ruling the ban unconstitutional.

Not from Florida but it is my experience school boards do the hiring and firing of all teachers, administration, superintendents, principals, etc. And PAYS them. My experience is the state does not pay anyone because the locally elected school board pays them with taxes locally collected. (Sweetened with some state $$$ - sure.)

What does Florida do? What am I missing?
