"A Tennessee school district is offering additional paid sick days to incentivize teachers to get vaccinated against COVID-19.
As COVID-19 cases spread among students, teachers and staff, Metro Nashville Public Schools, the state's second-largest school district with more than 6,000 teachers, is providing paid sick leave to employees unable to work because of COVID-19 but only if they have been vaccinated.
Most Metro Schools teachers start with 10 days of paid sick time a year. The district is paying for the additional sick leave with federal coronavirus relief money, known as ESSER funds.
Director of Schools Adrienne Battle made pointed remarks regarding the policy during last week's school board meeting.
This should ensure that staff are working when possible but also being mindful that there are breakthrough cases that lead to serious illness, and we want to be accommodating to that reality," Battle said.
"However, if you have chosen not to get the vaccine to significantly reduce the chances of illness from COVID, then it is not the responsibility of the district to financially compensate you for that decision."...(more)
