A HERETIC I AM
(24,370 posts)I crossed into Alaska at the Alaska Highway, Rte 1 crossing 2 years ago next month.
This spot here.
I asked the agent a few questions about the gig and was surprised to find out that the station he worked at - one so remote that the folks who work there...LIVE there - was one of the top five most desired posts in the entire CBP network, primarily for pay.
He said the only others that paid about the same or better were in Hawaii, LAX, JFK in New York and O'Hare in Chicago, but because of the cost of living in those places, the increase was moot.
Not so on the AlCan Highway.
So sending a Border Patrol Agent from southern Texas to Alaska might sound miserable, but it would mean a significant pay hike!
BTW, I asked the guy where they have to go to get groceries. He told me they make a 600 mile round trip to Costco in Fairbanks once a month! In the winter if a bad storm hits, that trek to the store for food could take 3 days.

(269,054 posts)The U.S. special envoy for Haiti, Daniel Foote, has resigned over what he called the administration's "inhumane" treatment of Haitian migrants.
"With deep disappointment and apologies to those seeking crucial changes, I resign from my position as Special Envoy for Haiti, effective immediately," he said in his resignation letter to Secretary of State Antony Blinken on Wednesday, obtained by NBC News.
Foote deplored the "inhumane, counterproductive decision to deport thousands of Haitian refugees and said that his own recommendations have been ignored and dismissed." He said his resignation is effective immediately.
