and they don't hold a shape well enough to fit snugly. It's one of the reasons it drives me nuts at the place I go for breast cancer care - and they require I use one.

Mine are all well-fitted - no gaps at the sides or around the nose. So they make me swap a fabric one that fits well and only had the gaps within the weave (a fraction of a mm through two or three layers of fabric) for one that gaps at the sides and around the nose of up to 1/2 inch.

I can fit it inside and still get a good seal from mine - so it just adds another layer, with all layers snugly fitted. On top I don't think it adds much since it still creates the gaps between my mask and the outer mask.

It's just annoying that the stuff they require me to wear can't be sealed. Those plastic nose "wires" are such a waste.

all the paper masks I've purchased have the thin aluminum strip on top, and then I apply a strip of double-sided tape along the top seam where the aluminum is.

That gives me the best seal possible, in my opinion. I suppose the tape would greatly enhance the effectiveness of the masks without the aluminum strip as well.

Totally worthless, since the elastic earbands just pull the bends out.

The cloth masks I wear fit snugly without tape (I include a 22 gauge wire in the upper seam). If I feel I need more protection than 2 or 3 layers of cloth (depending on the mask), I add an internal filter so it doesn't impact the seal.

Since I wear a mask 7-days a week, tape is a no-go for me. My skin won't tolerate it (longer than about 24 hours creates lesions - so I have to use tegaderm, or something similar, whenever I've had surgery - or just leave it open to the air).

a great deal longer than myself. The double-sided tape works well for me, but I'm only wearing the mask when I'm in public places, and that's seldom longer than 30 minutes at a time.

My method certainly wouldn't be suited for your needs. I guess we've all improvised in ways that suit our own situation. Practical necessity, in dealing with the COVID virus, has been the mother of invention for most of us.

For those who refuse to take part in defeating this virus, the anti-maskers, they remain abjectly ignorant of any positive ways to protect themselves. Sooner or later they'll pay the COVID piper, and that's usually a dear price to pay.
