Merck, the manufacturer of Ivermectin, announced today it's successful clinical trial for a new antiviral pill called molnupiravir to treat covid.
Though they're different drugs, the pro-Ivermectin folks are already going hard on the conspiracy theories.

(33,643 posts)The evidence for ivermectin having SOME positive effect is not as much of a joke as people on DU believe.
Ergo it could be Merck figured out a small tweak to it to make a 'new' drug that has a reliable, statistically significant effect.
Just sayin'

(5,969 posts)Have their been any studies showing that Ivermectin is effective in doses suitable for humans?
And from the little I read, there are completely different principles behind how these two drugs work.

(21,447 posts)but from your response, it must have been peculiar.
I'm feeling a bit cautious about this new pill. From what I've read about the trials, it certainly sounds effective, and maybe the technique is even promising as a treatment method for other viruses. My only concern is about manipulating the RNA of a virus that is present in the body. Could the manipulation go wrong?

(5,969 posts)My response addressed the two points of the deleted post.
As for the dangers, that is way above my knowledge and I think we are left to relying on studies and scientists. It should be noted that it's used once you caught Covid so it's not something you just take to go to a bar. It introduces errors to hinder the replication process and seems effective at that. Us laymans don't have the knowledge to know why it would only affect viruses. I can only assume that "positive" changes for the virus would be extremely unlikely and according to Merck, it cannot cause changes in human cells.
wnylib
(21,447 posts)I don't think that would or could happen. It's the changes in the virus that I wonder about. The pill is supposed to disrupt the replication process by introducing mutations into the virus to give the virus incorrect transcription information. Then the virus can't reproduce itself inside the human body. But I wonder if the coronavirus could adapt to the transcription errors that the pill delivers.
I don't know if that's possible and don't expect you to answer it, either. It's just a question that occurred to me.

(54,372 posts)No, no, NO, guys! Continue to take ivermectin! Or Laetrile, or Clorox, we don't care.
But if Merck's pill is effective against Covid-19, please go back to taking that other stuff you used to tout. If you keep tilting towards taking an effective medicine, we are going to insist on Merck naming it "Obamaliberaline." See if you can swallow a pill with THAT name!
