'Utterly trash': Fox News faces backlash after attacking amputee Tammy Duckworth for using veteran benefits

In a column on Sunday, Fox News writer Dom Calicchio reported that Duckworth had not paid property tax on her Illinois home since 2015.

The headline for the column omitted the fact that Duckworth legally qualifies for the tax break because she is a disabled veteran who lost both of her legs when an Army helicopter was hit by a rocket-propelled grenade in 2004.

38. If you are designated as 100% disabled

you do not pay property taxes in some states. I sell Real Estate. I had a guy as a client who was 100% disabled veteran. I couldn't figure out why he never answered the phone or wouldn't contact me from noon until about 9 pm. Turns out, he had talk radio and Fox news on during those hours poisoning his mind. He was paranoid, wanted to move because he saw black people in his neighborhood and told me so. Certain words can trigger those in the Fox cult. We talked about a property being near a school and he went off about a school shooter and how all FBI agents should be fired because they "had him in their office and let him go." Before he shot up the school. Also, the Boston Marathon shooter was being watched by the FBI. Before the bombing, they had him in their office and "they let him go." When I told him most FBI agents are very conservative, law and order guys who are dedicated to solving crimes and "you have to let them do their jobs." He called my broker to complain, saying I was a "radical".

on edit: I guess my point was, there are right-wing disabled vets also. I suspect a lot of them will be offended by this guy's rant.

I think it’s something we should start making noise about.

Reckless distortion of the facts, for the purpose of targeting a perceived “foe”. That’s not “news writing.” That’s misrepresentation at the very least, definitely attempted character-assassination, and possibly attempted libel.

I’m not sufficiently well-versed in the legal aspects. But seems to me this should be actionable in some way. Could a disabled veterans group sue on her behalf?

I hope the climate has changed enough that these howls of protest could gain some traction, but I fear the target audience is the very limited and elusive "middle." The right has hardened, if anything, and a LOT.

Saxby Chambliss seemed to pay no price at all for his absolutely outrageous attacks on Mr. Cleland. The great hope is that enough of the center to make a difference has grown sick of this kind of disgusting campaigning (not to mention governance) since then, and can be led back into the light.

The slandering of an actual war hero (Bronze Star, Silver Star, among other medals) was breathtaking in it's audacity, dishonesty and any semblance of decency. The smaller sideshow, if you will, was that SC received a medical deferment from military service due to an old football injury to one of his knees.

His true pluck came years later when he listed jogging among his hobbies. Oddly, I have heard of people being accepted into the military who have never jogged. I guess his knee got better over time.
