General Discussion
Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsWell, I just joined the club nobody wants to be in.
My cousin's wife just passed away from Covid. She had been admitted to the hospital a couple of weeks ago. Her systems began to shut down this morning due to of lack of oxygen. She was a nurse, but they lived in rural Georgia. Need I say more?
Right now, at a time when all I should be feeling is sadness and concern for my cousin, I'm caught between it and blind rage. SHE WAS A NURSE. Everything she knew, everything she practiced, everything she saw, told her vaccines were safe and effective. Everything told her to get one. But no. Thanks to Fox Noise and TFG, one wasn't necessary because it was all a hoax, right?
I didn't think I could hate Trump more than I did before this morning. I was wrong.
Thanks for listening.

(102,236 posts)If not for the extremes of misinformation propagandizing--much for selfish political aims--I think so many might have done the right thing and gotten vaccinated.
It is beyond tragic. Somedays I just become nauseated at the "what ifs."
BTW, of all the nurses and other health care workers, dental and medical technicians, and even a few veterinary technicians (the latter is even harder for me to explain) that I've spoken to on the vaccine, I'd say (before mandates) I was batting about 45% agreeing to get the vaccine. This, though was after major group presentations and finally a lot of one-on-one time, reinforced by some colleagues. I'd guess about 30% more have come on since the mandates were announced, but damn if there aren't some hardcore resisters, who just can't leave aside all the nonsense they've held on to for almost two years now.

(5,125 posts)YEAH, it IS a big club.
But I feel for the OP.
HOW does a nurse who faces the facts daily still believe the lies?
HOW can a nurse not see the truth that TFG deemed masks and vaccines as being against freedom when we know how hardworking and self sacrificing and educated most nurses are?
HOW does someone at that level fall for these lies?

(5,969 posts)and suggested to his supporters to take the vaccine as well. He got booed for that. That should tell you how deranged those anti-vaxxers are.
It's tragic that many lifes could have been saved but I also have to say, a nurse should have known better.
WinstonSmith4740
(3,056 posts)But he did it after a year of denial, obsfucation, and flat out lies. And as you observed, by that time, his supporters were so far down the rabbit hole even he can't get them out.
And her being a nurse is one of the things that pisses me off even more. She knew better. I don't know if she worked in the emergency room, but her education and experience told her he was wrong. And she still chose to believe him.

(3,166 posts)Yes, Trump got vaccinated after contracting the virus, getting treatment not available to most of us, and recovering. He covered his own lard ass while barely lifting a finger to help anyone else. And he refused to work with other former presidents to persuade people to get the vaccine.
By the time he got the vaccine, it was too late. After a year of downplaying the virus and disparaging medical professionals, his hardcore disciples were not going to listen to him about vaccines.
He is a deplorable pile of shit.

I feel it too. My best friend in college is a

(5,125 posts)So sorry for your loss.
My DIL is in health care with similar attitude. I don't think her work place gave her a choice though.
But her Mom, my son and her daughter all caught COVID.
Luckily it was a strain that did not kill or even hospitilize them.
So, of course, that "proves to them" they are right and the vaccines aren't valid.

(13,569 posts)Nope. My very healthy, hearty lumberjack (truly, that's his occupation) has been ill with Covid, and his wife was even more sick with it. And I took a look at his FB feed. (6,390 posts)Emotionally of course, but, it is hard. My wife's uncle got COVID in late February of 2020, said it was the worst thing he ever experienced. Yet, there are some relatives on her side who refuse the vaccination, despite him being well respected. On my side, just about everyone got it. Save one aunt and uncle...but did get it eventually, after they found out at a funeral, which we all know was COVID related but given a bullshit reason, all her siblings got the vaccine as well. It was just a couple of her children that were saying no to it.
An old friend wife got COVID and is still in recovery. While her brother in law still says its fake. No reaching to theses people. So you have to walk away after a certain point. And that's what they don't realize, we still care, but their stubbornness, leaves us few choices.

(659 posts)I feel the same way as you! I have a brother, he had covid last year at the very beginning and recovered. but he has some long covid effects and had to have holes in his heart closed up. Still to this day he won't vax up even with the more dangerous Delta going around. I no longer communicate with him due to his extreme belief in conspiracy stuff. You take care.

(1,402 posts)I hate to think about how many families in our world have been suffering the same tragic loss that you have. Wouldn't our lives have been different if DJT had schooled everyone on getting the vaccine and even made it mandatory, instead of just blowing it off. A lot of deranged DJT idiots would have listened to him. So sorry for your loss.

(9,823 posts)about the percentage of hospital employees in Georgia who are vaccinated and in some (large city & metro) hospital systems, it was very high. In my very rural (MTG district) county, I think the report said that 45% of hospital employees were unvaccinated. I couldn't find any verification of the statistics and am only reporting from memory.

(7,895 posts)Along with Mitch, Kevin, the GOP partisans in both houses, and the gang of enablers that pretended to be his cabinet and advisers who couldn't find a way to do the right thing even though they KNEW!
They KNEW and did everything to pretend or to advocate to diminish the apparent risk, to doubt the real science, to encourage the GOP governors and state legislators to resist and deny CDC and WHO recommendations.
What is even worse is that while many did it for political gain of some kind, some among them also did it to make a lot of money off the pandemic.
And to add further injury and insult many of us now live at risk from the reactionary mob who deny to their last breath or who violently threaten Nurses, Doctors, PA's, along with public officials and ordinary citizens.
I know I won't be tolerant of the next one I meet.

(6,797 posts)Went to lunch with my daughter and grandkids the other day. She says she's not going to get vaccinated. She also said she hopes she gets vivid so she can have a"few" days off work. (23,975 posts)Our younger son, soon to be 29, did it as soon as it was available.
Our older son, 31, actually participated in an all night mass vaccination event in Phoenix, where he lives. It was held at the AZ Cardinals stadium, and volunteers were needed for everything from directing traffic, to registering people, to administering the shots. He is not a health care worker, so could not give the injections. His job for the overnight event was to help those who just got their first shots to register for the second one. Because of his volunteering, he was able to get his shots sooner than if he had waited for his age group to be eligible.
He said it was a very rewarding experience, and not just because could get his own shots. He related that people were very grateful, very polite, and some were crying with relief. I was very proud of him for doing this.

(23,975 posts)Sounds not only stupid but dangerous.
Recently retired nurse here - 45 years as a peds NP. I vividly recall, during my first bedside job, having a sore middle finger nailbed from all the flicking of syringes to get out even the most miniscule of air bubbles from injections I drew up. We were taught no air bubble was safe, no matter how small.
A 50 cc bolus of a gas sounds like asking for trouble.

(34,051 posts)i wonder why she didn't get a vaccine--i mean, specifically why
i think all those medical "professionals" shouldn't be allowed to practice medicine if they are so crazy against the covid vaccine. it makes me wonder how that effects their patients -- and i don't mean by giving covid to them, but by not encouraging them to get vaccinated or wear masks, by not helping them understand how dire this pandemic is, etc
and if they don't get vaxed just to "own the libs" or fuck over biden... then their insane and absolutely shouldn't be allowed to "practice" medicine around anyone
