Still Republican ....

Ran into my nieces husband after not seeing him for like a year and a half the other day. We were tight back then. I mean really good friends, we got a couple beers and came back to my house ... talked about 'old times' etc ... he said he believes 'things happen for a reason' was why we somehow met up that day. I didn't feel it then and not tonight either.

Think it was his line he's 'Still Republican' I can't just brush off ... like really ... after the last 2 + years .... and we really never even talked politics that day. I have no feelings to keep in touch. Think he wanted to. I'm not there. Doubt I'll even try. Goodnight DU. Peace.

I have one Republican friend (54 years old), or should I say had one because she's no longer a Rethug, and voted NO against the recall on Newsom. She also hopes and prays that no one finds out on her new job (which she loves) that she used to be a Rethug. EVERYONE in her law office is a tRump hater she tells me 😆

She only became a thuglican 15 yrs ago because of her ex-boyfriend. They broke up several months ago because he didn't want to be told to get vaccinated, and she's been vaccinated for a while and gets her booster shot next month.

She says she's very happy to be thinking forherself again.

Ive gotten to a point where I can't even be around people who I used to hang with on a regular basis anymore other than my wife and two grown kids. I don't even want to meet new people anymore in my demographic because it seems like all I'm waiting for is them to drop the "Well I liked Trump" on me, and they all do, they just have to let you know. Or the "Biden did this, or the Biden did that horseshit just seems to come out of these people even on line at a deli?? I'm like WTF! I've even distanced myself from my sister and her husband who we've been close to for many years because of their Trump love. Had a guy in the local hardware store proudly saying how he has his ammo ready when Biden was being inaugurated back in January right in front of kids on line waiting to pay.

She started AGAIN with the mexicans, blacks and I told her if I wanted to watch FOX I would turn it on. Tucker is her favorite show of the day. My husband blocked his sister's number on his phone months ago. She is a Christian that has read the entire bible and she KNOWS that ONLY Christians can go to heaven. A real nutcase. I understand the 'divide and conquer' that is SO working in our country but just can't stomach these people. Sad state of affairs.

It's quite revealing.

One guy I work with who's a Republican, but I don't think voted for Trump reveals that Cons were really upset by the BLM protests, and that the media they consume portrayed it as civil unrest that burned dozens of cities to significantly. You'd think that hundreds of buildings were burned if you asked them. Of course, we know that only a hand full of buildings were burned down, and the most high profile ones were fires started by white supremacists in the crowd trying to start a race war. They view these "riots" as just as big of a deal as the insurrection was. The media he consumes shapes his views on these things dramatically. Here on DU, we know that the BLM protests were overwhelmingly peaceful and that the violence was limited to a few nights in a few cities. And we know that the majority of the violence was perpetrated by police onto protesters. We know that there were over 10,000 protests nationwide that resulted in less than 2,000 injuries to police officers, basically 1 injury for every 5 protests. Republicans think that police were killed and most of the protests were violent. They have no idea that the Insurrection was more violent for police than any 20 protests combined. The image they have of the BLM protests really bother them though, they think it was major civil unrest.

Another is a Trumpster and an anti vaxxer, I can't imagine WTF he's thinking and we no longer talk politics, but I think he's just quietly seething over Biden. Says he's not living in fear, lol.

Another old friend I spent time with a couple weeks ago is now Conservative. Out of the blue, this is a guy who went to one of the most prestigious Art Schools in the country. Now he's resentful of what he thinks are people who want to live for free off the government. I almost thought he was joking or just playing contrarian, but he wasn't he believes Dems want a nanny state and Republicans empower people to take care of themselves. And on Covid he's a flat out Covidiot, believes all of the laundry list of garbage; hospital Covid cash bonuses, Ivermectin, it's not that big of a deal, masks cause trauma to children etc. Of course I had to take him to task for all of that nonsense, but he's pretty far gone. Just crazy.

..the number of people I knew before Trumpism who did not embrace Trumpism.

I engaged a count-on-one-hand number of the pro-Trump in debate, never got rational explanations for their position and just quit engaging. I ended up concluding most of them are simply anti-Democrat positions, based more around selective disinformation, than fact. They use disinformation only as their argument...and you can not convince them otherwise.
