Should teenagers not be subject to comparison with others? Then should we eliminate school grades, sports competition, etc?
Just asking.

Senators said Tuesdays hearing is one in a series on child safety, following Haugens revelations to the Wall Street Journal that Facebooks own research shows that Instagram makes teen girls body images worse.
The findings about Instagrams impact on childrens and teens mental health have attracted the most attention among lawmakers, who last week hosted a hearing with Facebook head of safety Antigone Davis that devolved into heated confrontations.
Haugens leaks about the companies are wide-ranging, and she raised concerns in a 60 Minutes interview about Facebooks decision to disband its civic integrity team in the aftermath of the 2020 election ahead of the Jan. 6 attack on the Capitol. She has also raised concerns about the spread of misinformation on Facebook, particularly in non-English-speaking countries where the company has not invested as much in content moderation.
Facebook has sought to downplay the leaked research, saying the 60 Minutes interview disregards the significant investments we make to keep people safe on our platform. Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg and chief operating officer Sheryl Sandberg have not publicly commented on the revelations, which have plunged the company into public scandal in recent weeks.

(7,517 posts)The fact that you try and compare social media to school and sports doesn't give me any reason to take you seriously.

(7,517 posts)She obviously has inside knowledge, worked to change from within and when that didn't work, went public. We need more like her, not attacks on her on DU. But I think, judging from other posts about FB, we can expect exactly that.

Should we eliminate grades
of course not. Should the student who studies, does work to understand the material, takes practice tests and is involved in class get a better grade than the student who never participates, skips tests and doesnt do any home work
sure. Thats based on reality.
Should the athlete who studies the playbook, workouts out consistently and practices to improve skills beat the athlete who show up after skipping half the practices and spending the night before in a drinking contest with friends
sure.
The problem with the social media competitive is that its not based on reality. Its based on you comparing your reality to my project image of brand me. In that world, Im 63, 180 with a full head of dark natural black hair and I can run the 40 in 4.2. Should the other 65+ guys here feel less than
or maybe they have the life experience to call me on my bullshit. Lol
Point is, teens dont know everyone else is dumping bs. So yeah
lets cut back in the competitive fantasies snd get back to real life.

(7,733 posts)If so, ask them if having their looks or social status being compared to others is the same as academic achievement or sports competitions.

(9,953 posts)... the hearings. She seemed more right-leaning than left-leaning, to me. She had good rapport with Ted Cruz and the like... made me queasy but she also seemed on the same wavelength as Amy Klobuchar. I do think Congress needs to get more involved in regulations... yes on social media. But also on TV media. Tuckums is as much of a menace, as are his comrades. Remember "Tiller the Baby Killer?" Looks like Media is going to war with FB - they all want our attention exclusively.
