Riverside County Sheriff Chad Bianco paid for a year-long membership with the Oath Keepers, an anti-government extremist group
Prior to his election in 2018, Riverside County Sheriff Chad Bianco paid for a year-long membership in 2014 with an anti-government extremist group known as the Oath Keepers, Bianco told USA Today.
Bianco was one of 200 law enforcement officials whose names were included on a list of the Oath Keepers' members obtained by nonprofit journalist collective Distributed Denial of Secrets (DDS), the Desert Sun reported. Released to DDS by a hacker, a cache of documents from Oath Keepers servers - emails, chat logs, membership records, donor lists - revealed thousands of current and former members.
Across the country, a total of 21 law enforcement officers listed in the Oath Keepers' internal documents confirmed to USA Today that they are still serving, including Bianco, a corrections officer in Riverside, California.

Insider reached out to Bianco for comment about his prior Oath Keepers membership. According to the Riverside County Sheriff's Department website, he oversees the county's five jail facilities, over 4,000 employees, and an operating budget of nearly $800 million dollars.

(32,454 posts)"I paid for a year membership in 2014. I don't even remember. I found an email after all this started coming out," the sheriff responded when contacted by Eyewitness News for comment.
Bianco said he was a member for one year while he was a lieutenant in the department.
He defended the group, saying they support the Constitution.
"I've given a couple statements so far. I guess my point would be that what happened on Jan. 6 by a few people, should have nothing to do with something I did in 2014 with an organization that supports the Constitution," Bianco told Eyewitness News.
"I, along with every law enforcement officer, politician including the president, swear an oath to uphold the Constitution against all enemies," Bianco stated. "Only in today's politically polarized environment, does being a proud American who supports the Constitution make you a right wing extremist. The hypocrites who cry that one bad apple doesn't mean everyone is bad, now want everyone bad because of a few bad apples."

(12,650 posts)It comes from various old sayings from pretty much all of Europe about the process of storing apples or making apple cider - "One bad Apple spoils the whole bushel/bag/brew" .
The saying is also used to indicate that one bad actor ruins the entire endeavor of the group.
Like one bad policeman ruins the reputation of the entire police force.
The other side of that saying -the common sense warning, as it were - is that the apple that is going bad needs to be removed before the rest are ruined.
The Michael Jackson song notwithstanding. Too many people confuse that song with the saying.
