AUSTIN (KXAN) — Video of a conflict that happened inside an Austin Vietnamese restaurant is garnering tens of thousands of views on social media and sparking conversations about hate against Asian Americans and how to stop it.

Whitney Spence posted the below video on TikTok after witnessing the incident last week, which KXAN has edited for language. We also blurred the customer’s face, since she has not been charged with any crime.

A female customer seems to get agitated with staff at the Vietnamese restaurant, at one point saying, “…Speak enough English so that they can take your order.” ...

Then, Spence says the customer got upset again when she asked for miso soup, which wasn’t on the menu.

I grew up in the military and we were stationed in various Asian countries.

The big differences between Asian countries are obvious in terms of language, appearance, clothing, cuisine, customs, etc.

I suppose it is all the same to Americans who have never traveled outside their own state.

I took a friend of mine to a Japanese restaurant and she wanted to order hot and sour soup.

14. There are times for miso soup and there are times for pho

Miso soup is usually an accompaniment to a meal where the quality of the ingredients makes even simple food shine. Pho is IMHO more of a meal in itself. For me, miso is a summer soup, pho is for rainy winter days.

We make the trip to Chinatown Center at least once a month. We often stop at that restaurant for lunch, usually having some pho. We've never seen an incident such as that. It is a well known, well respected spot.
