FAMILY VALUES! Republicans have rejected multiple bills outlawing child-marriage.

The bill, introduced in March by Democratic state Sen. Yvonne Dorsey-Colomb, would bar anyone under age 16 from marrying in the state and block 16- and 17-year-olds from marrying anyone more than four years older.

When the House took up the bill, several conservative Republicans, whose party controls the chamber, balked at the idea, heavily rewriting the bill to allow those under 18 to marry with parental consent and requiring those under 16 to get judicial consent.

Idaho legislators rejected a bill that would have blocked marriage for youth under age 16 in the state, The Idaho Statesman reported.

The bill, proposed, by Democratic Representative Melissa Wintrow, aimed to prevent children under 16 from getting married and would require consent of the child, parents and a court before a marriage. Current state law allows children younger than 16-years-old to get married with parental and judicial consent, and teens who are 16 and older to get married with only parental consent.

The GOP-controlled House of Representatives voted against the legislation in a 39-28 vote on Thursday.

"I do not think courts should be involved in marriage at all," Republican representative Bryan Zollinger said. "I don't believe there should be a license required to get married. I think two willing people should be able to go and get married."

Unless you are gay.

State House Republicans in Tennessee on Wednesday effectively killed a bill to ban child marriages in an effort to bolster a conservative lawyer’s case against the Supreme Court decision on same-sex marriage.

...

Fowler’s email said he is preparing a lawsuit to counter the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision to legalize same-sex marriage in the 2015 case of Obergefell v. Hodges.

Fowler is arguing that the Supreme Court’s ruling essentially nullified all Tennessee marriage licenses when it opened the spectrum of legal marriage beyond just between a man and a woman, The Tennessean reported.

If Tennessee were to ban child marriages by modifying state marriage law, lawmakers would be acknowledging the existence of same-sex marriage, according to Fowler’s legal theory.
