I know the man wasn't perfect, but I think he deserves credit for the things he did do right, and after some of the posts here raking him over the coals yesterday, it's nice to see this lovely message from the Carters. That is all.

...is that people bashing Powell's WMD claims are overlooking the fact that Bush contravened UN 1441. Powell's statements at the UN had no legal meaning. The inspectors were still on the ground. By deflecting to Powell they are basically letting Bush off the hook. Powell could've literally said "diddly diddly do dah day" and it would've had the same international legal meaning as his entire WMD speech. Bush did not submit a resolution to invade, and invaded illegally. Basically, Powell was following orders. Side and pony show.

He should've stepped down though.

He wasn't exactly the poster child of innocence. And his two sons were looking more sadistic than him.

The Iraqi army did surrender in mass like they expected. But they expected the US to assume control and pay them. It was others who decided to disband them and create massive unemployment issue. So they took their weapons and became insurgents.
