Jetson One personal eVTOL looks like a ton of fun to fly

zoom zoom

https://newatlas.com/aircraft/jetson-aero-personal-evtol/

If anyone can think of a more perfect name for a personal eVTOL, we're listening! Sweden's Jetson Aero has already sold out the 2022 production run of this cute little single-seat kit build, which is capable of zooming along at 63 mph (102 km/h).

The Jetson One is a simple design purely dedicated to muckin' about and having fun. Its single seat is suspended in an aluminum/carbon fiber spaceframe. It's a straight-up drone-style multicopter, with eight props mounted coaxially on four arms, putting out a total peak of 88 kW (118 horsepower). Jetson says it'll fly safely if one motor dies, but frankly I'd be more interested in landing safely at that point.

The pilot flies it with a throttle lever on the left, a joystick on the right, and a pair of pedals, presumably controlling yaw. There's some very basic system information displayed on a little dash that frankly looks like a smartphone in a cradle.

I don't think you'd want to be making an emergency landing in the middle of the ocean in one. n/t PoliticAverse Oct 2021 #4

Just imagine what it will be like when the battery life and speed are increased. If they get them tweaked to the point where you can cross the ocean with them, it will be a monumental achievement in travel. I've always wanted to cross the Atlantic and have dinner in Paris once in a while and return by bedtime. That might not be as far into the future as I thought.

But if they get them to where they're as dependable as airplanes, it might be all right. After all, nobody thinks twice about flying across the ocean in a jet. You also wouldn't want to have an emergency landing in one of those, but they're so dependable that hardly anyone thinks twice about it.

But there may be exceptions for piloted things flying less that 50 meters or someone akin to that. (Just checked and this will require a private pilot license).

I like it.

It's a flying cycle. The next best thing to a jet pack.

Now... How much?

$92,000

15 minute flight time

90kg total weight

I think we need bigger and more efficient battery tech.

But it s a start.

HAve similar regulations as ultralight aircraft. I am not up on those.
It also seems to have a 15 or so minute run time. Some of that depends on body weight.
Body weight is a greater factor in this than bikes or cars because you need to keep this in the air....

8 unprotected carbon fiber rotors that spin at 1000s of rpm—a great way to get decapitated.

It would make me nervous to have those blades spinning so closely to me. The pilot could lose a hand, or a neck.

Trouble is, it has two disadvantages: a mere 15 minutes of flying time, plus a guaranteed divorce.

If an engine or engine controller fails in one of those you have a much better chance of surviving a forced landing.

An ultralight plane or autogyro with vertical take off and landing capabilities would be interesting.

I don't like noise. If I hear noisy machines at my beach or desert hangouts I'm highly annoyed. The noise of an electric motor isn't quite so bad as a two stroke engine, but they all sound like giant irritating insects.

The paragliders don't bother me. Any sound they make is subtle. Some of them can stay aloft for hours.
