and frankly am of two minds. First, I qualify based on occupation (I am a teacher in a school where we have students attending in person). I made my appointment about an hour ago. I could have gotten it as early as 2 if I weren't at work. In short, no wait. My county's rate is 51 partial/ 44 full. Now, honestly, on one level it is a disgrace that I am getting my third shot before nearly half of my area has gotten its first and with over half not fully vaccinated. And if there were a line, I wouldn't be jumping it based on occupation. That would be, in a word, gross. So while I am grateful to be getting my booster, I am disappointed too.
And to be really honest. I still feel bad on some level here. I know that in a sane world we would be vaccinating everyone once before some get a third dose.
update you all should make sure to call the place you make the appointment with if you did so online. I showed up but they aren't doing them yet. this was Walmart so I tried Walgreens and the same thing happened (this time they hadn't defrosted the vaccine). So I will be doing tomorrow I guess. But call first is the lesson.

(5,624 posts)within 12 hrs of getting his "booster" he was as sick as a dog....I've never seen him like this and none of these symptoms had either of us experienced with our 2 full does prior. He was incoherent, shaking, chilled, said his legs were on fire and he was cold everywhere else. He really had me frightened.
I made a point of asking the clinic last week if they had the half dose and was told yes...will be phoning them today.

(21,322 posts)That is what was approved by CDC. My pharmacy is still preparing the booster shots. Anyone who got full dose Moderna boosters was not what was authorized.

(5,624 posts)Here's what they said -
What is the difference between a booster shot and an additional dose?
A booster shot is administered when a person has completed their vaccine series and protection against the virus has decreased over time.
Additional doses are administered to people with moderately to severely compromised immune systems. This additional dose of an mRNA-COVID-19 vaccine is intended to improve immunocompromised peoples response to their initial vaccine series.

(44,973 posts)Got the fever the next day-it lasted for two days. Also got a Moderna arm that lasted for about a week.

(47,014 posts)You are doing the responsible thing in terms of protecting yourself, students and the rest of the community the students have contact with.
I feel bad that you were not able to get the booster at the start of the school year. That is when it should have been given.
Thank goodness you have another layer of protection now.
I wish our rate here were higher but in the meantime I am protecting myself.

(58,785 posts)in the only way you can helping make your community safer in spite of those who are still refusing to be vaccinated -- even as OFFICIAL deaths exceed 750,000! There's no line jumping, just ethical and responsible people versus depraved indifference to life.
Crazy times.

(52,160 posts)the fact is I benefitted twice from people not lining up. Once when I got my first shot back in Feb (teachers got bumped as vaccine piled up) and now for the booster. I would prefer that people had lined up but I am going to get mine if they won't.

(58,785 posts)We got our Pfizer boosters a couple weeks ago. We were both 6 months past our first two. But also I have a serious autoimmune disorder on suppression, and he's 81. Like you but for different reasons, we're supposed to get them. Zero guilt. We don't feel privileged, we feel lvulnerable -- and responsible.
After all, there's disagreement about whether most people need it at all yet, and we don't know anyone anxious to get it who hasn't been advised.
There were a couple others at the pharmacy getting their first or second shot at the time, but we just wondered what finally, belatedly brought them in and wished the other half of the county still refusing would show up too. It's pretty much like yours around here.

(52,160 posts)in terms of a line. When I got my first, vaccine was still scarce in some parts of the country (honestly all of it) but then people stopped wanting it here which allowed the governor to put teachers in the mix. We were put in on 23 Feb, I got my shot on 28 Feb.

(58,785 posts)Our son's work took him into hospitals, SNFs, etc, so he was among the first; our teacher DIL's whole district was asked to get vaccinated I think in March when it became pretty widely available.
Now I remember that we held off a bit at first getting my husband vaccinated because of limited supplies. We were retired, isolation no big sacrifice, and unvaccinated people were being forced to work in public every day. But with 80% of those of my husband's age group dying if they got it, we didn't want to wait long and were glad when it really started happening across the nation.
Everyone who voted to get government out of Republican hands did good. Death tolls among those who wanted vaccination would be a lot higher if we hadn't. And the overall vaccination rate for those over 65 is 91%, which includes a whole lot of tRump voters and parents of tRump voters. Most of them as early in line as scheduled.

Interesting that occupation counts, but being a student apparently doesn't.

(23,339 posts)... allowing the allocation to go to someone who is refusing to take it?
There's more vaccine than we need. You can have yours without depriving anyone. Get it and feel good.
If there was some other plan for the vaccines, such as innoculating the continents of Africa and South America, I might be willing to go without my third shot. Too late for such sentiment for me; I got my booster this morning.

(52,160 posts)yeah it is foolish to let the vaccines rot for lack of use. It isn't my fault we had refusniks.

(5,164 posts)Do you realize the reason the vaccination rate is low is because people are refusing vaccines that is the main reason. Get your booster and dont feel any guilt whatsoever. This country absolutely does not care what happens to its most vulnerable citizens, especially the elderly, if they did they wouldve done the right thing from the start. And it is not all on dumpster. You need to do what you need to do to protect yourself and your family etc. There was a lot of cheating in the beginning with the first vaccines as well people who shouldnt have been getting vaccinated were using family members IDs and stuff like that to get a vaccine when they werent even eligible. And the wrong people were made eligible before high risk which is what should have been done medically.
Everything that has been done in this country since the start of the pandemic was one big fuck up and it caused my fathers death because he shouldve had a vaccine long before any young healthy frontline workers or other such people like that. Half of those people, at least, refused vaccines and some of those vaccines were thrown away- they couldve been given to people like my father who really needed it. Do not feel any guilt, get your booster.
I had my booster a little over a week ago and I had a much worse reaction I am not sure if its because I have not been well with everything going on the past month which is very extreme which I am not going to detail here or if it was just a worse reaction this time. It was the full dose Pfizer. I had a worse immediate reaction and then I was pretty sick for about a week. At one point I was thinking Im going to have to go to a doctor because I was worried my heart was being affected however I managed not to do that and the last place I want to go to right now any the hospital.
