(42,700 posts)Virginia has long permitted campaigns to have signs, tables, and workers handing out sample ballots so long as they're at least 40 feet from the entrance to the polling place. I voted in Virginia today and there were folks from both the McAuliffe and Youngkin campaigns handing out sample ballots in the parking lot. I can't recall when this hasn't been the case in Virginia.

(4,448 posts)In every state I've seen, that's pretty well known and the parties just stand outside it.
In the states I've lived in, this sort of this is very common for all parties.

(2,271 posts)Whats your assessment of the race ?. Do you think Northern Virginia will come out in force and carry the State for Terry ?

(1,396 posts)Anecdotally, there were a lot of people voting today in Northern Virginia and it looked like mostly dems, nobody stopped at the repuke booth outside. My guess is it'll be 60/40 McCauliffe as most of the population in Virginia is in the north. The TV ads have been spewing "it's too close to call" for weeks but I don't see it, there are very few Youngkin (I call him Bumpkin) signs even in red areas but again, that's in Northern Virginia. Southern VA is full of covidiots and has a few Rs that voted against the election so Bumpkin will get some votes there.

(2,271 posts)Thanks, sounds good. Last Election, the media also said it would be very close, but Northam won by 8 or 9 points.

(16,389 posts)Pretending the race is perilously close, McAuliffe is hanging by a thread, etc., is more fun than just reporting the boring facts. At least that's my theory.

(42,700 posts)This is the second day of in-person absentee voting at "satellite" locations in my county. There were 50-60 folks in line at around 3:30 on a Friday afternoon (the polls are open 12-7 weekdays now). It was just as long when I left. One of the poll workers said that they've been busy all day and they've probably had a couple of thousand votes cast in a day in a half.

(182,788 posts)But he seems to be closing well. Big names and clearly the money is pouring into ads.
Youngkin went big early on ads and I see a lot of signs. I saw a guy this morning at an intersection holding a sign and waving to people.

"Yes please. That way I'll know who not to vote for."

(21,323 posts)who helped fund the 1/6 insurrection has poured millions into the Virginia race. His name is something like Ueiline. I know I spelled it wrong. I wish that these rich people like the Mercers and Koch foundation would get a knock on the door from the FBI, but I don't see that happeneing.
Watching Joy and Jamie Raskin was on and he was asked about the select committee following the money, I was dismayed when Raskin answered he knew nothing about the committee following the money although it was really important.
This is why DOJ needs to lead the way, it has the resources to follow the money. Sorry got off track but Raskin's answer pissed me off.
I keep thinking of Alito allowing dark money in politics. A handful of billionaires fund GQPers.

(1,309 posts)Fortunately, Ive always been able to vote on Election Day in NOVA without a line. In fact, its never taken me more than ten minutes to vote - no idea why. I do my best to be civil to the republicans handing out sample ballots outside, but it takes a lot of restraint. The thought of a Trump surrogate like Youngkin winning here is terrifying. We are not the South anymore.
