Actor James Michael Tyler, who played much loved coffee shop barista Gunther on the sitcom Friends, has died at the age of 59 after a battle with prostate cancer, his manager, Toni Benson, said in a statement Sunday.
Tyler passed away peacefully at his home in Los Angeles, the statement said, per the Associated Press. Tyler is survived by his wife, Jennifer Carno.
Tyler, first cast in the series in 1994, starred in 150 episodes of Friends during the shows 10-year run but was not given a line of dialogue in the show until he had made over 30 appearances, the AP reported.
For 10 seasons, Gunther was not just the much loved barista at Central Perk coffee shop, but also a man utterly infatuated with Rachel Green, played by Jennifer Aniston the character to whom he finally confessed his love in the series finale in 2004 before she moved to France
