(31,022 posts)Nice job by the congregants though. Hes lucky he didnt get clocked like the other guy. I guess they restrained them selves because it was church.

(22,366 posts)He would instead undergo the sacrament of confession, sincerely ask forgiveness of God (and God knows when you are bullshitting), then perform the required penance as assigned by the priest.
I would hope the penance would involved working with recovering Covid patients

(24,468 posts)My Dad once told me, don't argue with an idiot that is sure he is right. I tend to agree.
I can pretty much scope these folks within a couple of minutes of communication and then vector off their radar.

(5,125 posts)I grew up Catholic and grew away during Pope Benedict's time.
But, the way I was taught is that people really want to keep their spiritual life clear and free from even sinful thinking because that often leads one into the path of those bad ideas. So when one has actually DONE something wrong, that is a big confession.
Confession was available weekly as a kind of spiritual check in and often it was about losing patience and/or saying something hurtful, white lies, internal rebellion. Once in my teen years I was really mad at my Mom for whatever, and our priest also was a trained therapist and said, "That happens to a lot of kids" and proceeded to help me find better ways to deal with my issues so I could have a better relationship with her and still grow and be independent.

What are the 3 essential acts of the penitent?
The sacrament of Penance is a whole consisting in three actions of the penitent and the priest's absolution. The penitent's acts are repentance, confession or disclosure of sins to the priest, and the intention to make reparation and do works of reparation.

It seems archaic and namby pamby in some ways, but the heart of the matter is to really be a better person and get rid of anything that drags a person in hateful or disrespectful behavior.

(24,468 posts)I was an alter boy and did the whole Catholic treatment because....alter boy. I always felt uncomfortable confessing to the Priest that obviously knew me. My "sins" were pretty benign, in retrospect, but I spent a lot of time figuring how to confess to reasonable sins without getting the Priest concerned about my soul.
TigressDem
(5,125 posts)I did both.
Even in the booth, you had to figure, the priest probably knew who you were in a small parish, but face to face, that was a bit of a shock.
Still after a bit, it made the priest less of an authority figure per se and more of someone who could show they cared about you.
I don't even remember many specific "sins" but I got the idea they thought I was "reaching" for stuff and wasn't really bad enough to be at confession most of the time.
I know I had a wicked sarcastic streak and often would be really sorry for something I said that ripped someone apart, though that was my way to avoid actual fights a lot of the time. So the lesser of two evils maybe, but still felt bad when I walked into Church knowing what I'd said.

(28,075 posts)to see someone behave like that at Mass and on the Altar still has a shock value for me. If only my grandma had been there, she could of turned him to stone with the look she would have given him.
(ThoughI liked how the altar boys kept their hands in the prayer position the whole time.)
