https://www.rawstory.com/kansas-sen-suellentrop-sentenced-to-2-days-in-jail-after-wrong-way-dui-on-i-70/TOPEKA, Kan. Kansas Sen. Gene Suellentrop will spend two days in jail for a wild wrong-way drunken ride down Interstate 70 in Topeka this spring after pleading no contest Monday to driving under the influence and reckless driving. In exchange for pleading no contest on the misdemeanor charges, prosecutors dismissed a felony charge of attempting to flee or elude law enforcement officers that stemmed from his March 16 chase with police that ultimately ended near downtown Topeka. The Wichita Republican, who is said to have called an officer donut boy following his arrest, would have been forc...
Another example of Republican "support" of police. He looks as if he has had a few donuts himself.

No forced rehab treatment?
No fine?
Hmm...
Two systems of justice indeed.

(3,816 posts)I hadn't even thrown ethnicity into the equation. I was just thinking about an average DUI.

(35,699 posts)The charges Suellentrop pleaded to carried a maximum nine months in prison combined. But Shawnee County Judge Jason Geier said it is typical to suspend all but two days of the sentence for first offenders in these cases.
Suellentrop was previously denied diversion, a process by which low-level offenders can agree to conditions in lieu of prosecution.
Still pretty light though, I agree, in light of fleeing the police and then dissing the cops trying to arrest him. Apparently the "donut boy" remark was not caught on video because the cops weren't recording, which raises additional questions.

Indeed, if you are a white politician, you have a permanent get out of jail card.

(65,042 posts)About 20 years ago, we went to a jam night where a guy was obliterated.
The woman was giving him "drinks" for free, but they were virgin marys. She did it just to keep him from blowing his stack.
Some moron told him she wasn't putting vodka in them and he erupted. Throwing stuff, screaming, knocking over chairs...
She calls cops, so he bolts.
Place is near the interstate so he takes off and gets in the southbound lane going north. Unfortunately, there's a big lift in the road where a dozen railroad tracks go under the highway.
A van going the right way gets to top of hill, and this drunken maniac is right there.
Massive head-on crash, and both people in the van got killed.
Since the whole jam night went south after that incident, we were leaving when we heard sirens from every direction. We found out the next morning what happened.
If that jerk had just let him drink his virgin marys he probably would have passed out. They put him in his car, call the cops & give them the guy's keys. Nobody dies.

(60,010 posts)Any failure to attend is reported to the judge.
I ran Sub. Abuse treatment programs in Fla. and Ala. The judges did send non cooperative clients to jail.
He also has to have an ignition lock on his car, I'm assuming the kind where you have to blow into and it won't let car start if you have alcohol in your system.
Admittedly a serious alkie will figure out how to have a buddy blow into it. Hopefully by now there are newer ones that can't easily be fooled.
The article indicates this was his first DUI arrest . The sentence is a good one for first time offender, actually.
In addition, he lost his leadership role in the state senate.
All these consequences will hopefully be the wake up call he so clearly needs.

(47,058 posts)Who led the cops on a chase, eluding them, etc.
I get the sentence for the DUI. I just don't get why eluding the police and leading them on a chase didn't result in more jail time.

(8,922 posts)Felony or not. Low character pieces of shit like this should not be involved in law making process. How does one represent his constituents while sitting in jail?
