He was a little known surprise winner getting his very first win for a low budget team (that had also never won a race before). This was in the NASCAR Xfinity Series which is one rung below the top NASCAR Cup Series.

The broadcasting reporter didn't understand what the crowd was chanting and she commented that they were saying "Let's Go Brandon" & it went viral after that. Normally, winning a big race like he did would make it a lot easier to get sponsorship, but I believe sponsors are afraid of being tagged with any controversy, so his team is bearing repercussions for something they had absolutely nothing to do with.
