(6,477 posts)Not even the rabid ideological gun fanatics, who, of course, think it's hilarious. We keep dying at their hands.
They'll be along shortly to quiz folks on vocabulary, because they're very knowledgeable and ethical, doncha know.

(4,552 posts)11 states require you to report stolen guns. There are liability issues if the gun is used in a crime.

(6,477 posts)Every illegal gun starts out as a legal gun. Every one.
Be interesting to do an audit of people who have filed multiple stolen gun reports across counties. Tra la, the gun owner lobbies run America, so we'll just keep dying from all the "stolen" guns they're selling.

(19,060 posts)I came from a pretty rough neighborhood. Stayed out of trouble myself, but everyone in my neighborhood knew people who could get you anything, including guns. Burglars absolutely target homes that have guns in them, 100%, always have, always will. Stickers on windows for the NRA or that say things like "will shoot intruders" are the neon signs for making your home a target for thieves. Guns are the same as cash on the street.
And most burglaries happen during the day, when homeowners are at work. It's not really complicated, you want to make sure no one is home when you break into a home, so you ring their door bell or knock. If someone answers the door you pretend you're lost or looking for so and so.
That's how guns get on the streets in part. People also rob gun stores regularly. Or they go to states with lax gun laws and have a cousin or friend with a clean record buy as many guns as they can and then report them stolen eventually.

(12,650 posts)More often than not, gun owners with "Lookie here, I'm a tough guy gun owner who will shoot anything that makes me uncomfortable" stickers all over their homes, vehicles, and outdoor wear advertising they most likely have unsecured firearms around them will be targeted for theft by those looking to get free guns for their own use.
The other situation is that the registered owner of one (or several) firearm wants to sell it or otherwise get rid of it, but doesn't want to go through background checks or other safeguards to ensure felons or those who have been flagged as public threats can't just purchase firearms on a whim.
They sell it for cash or barter, then trust whomever they sold it to isn't going get pulled over or commit a crime with that weapon on him or her.
I've seen both situations over the years.
