From what I have seen on social media there is low turn out so far today in VA. does that mean that the trump base isn't voting, and do the dems have enough of a lead in the early vote to win?

(45,631 posts)No one has reported on turnout except that the early voting turnout was much higher.

(34,857 posts)Truth be told, I'm not optimistic about Virginia anyway.
FWIW: some people have legitimate questions they ask that may be negative because they want reassurance what they're seeing or hearing is not true.

They would redraw and gerrymander the legislative and congressional boundaries like the way they were over the last 10 years. Those boundaries allowed the Republicans to lose the vote, badly, and still win a majority of the seats. The Democrats had to win in a landslide in order to undo the gerrymandering.
They would also attack voting rights be taking action to suppress the vote. They might even allow for a state takeover of local election boards.
Glenn Youngkin didn't campaign on any of this, but it seems highly likely that he would turn around and do it. I hope he doesn't win, and if he does I really hope that the GOP doesn't win both houses of the legislature. Democracy is at stake.

(4,846 posts)Isn't the conventional wisdom that democrats early votes and republicans do same day voting? Though, I guess low turn out are usually meant for populated cities rather than a rural site where there would never be any lines if at all.

Are you sitting at home wondering whether it's worth going out to vote because McAuliffe is going to win anyway? Or lose anyway?

(3,528 posts)That doesn't report low turnout. It reports expected turnout. Of all precincts reporting, only one reports lower turnout and attributes that to early voting.

(30,613 posts)They've upgraded the early/absentee/mail processes this year; we have drop boxes in libraries, for example.
So I expect more people are using those options, compared to 2020, which was the first year they allowed everybody to do any of that.

(17,326 posts)Many of the experts I've seen on TV talking about this subject, such as Larry Sabato, say that mail and early in person voting has and will favor Democrats. The republicans are counting on same day voting to make up the gap. In other words, there are more R votes left outstanding, and the ones that vote in person today will likely be R. Therefore, low turnout today would favor Dems. This is counter to what we usually hear about low turnout hurting Dems, but it only applies to in person same day voting. Welcome to DU!
